‘General Hospital’ spoilers indicate that fans can’t seem to get enough of their girl, Carly Spencer (Laura Wright). Long-time fans tend to have a favorite whom they consider “the definitive Carly.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Carly Has Been Played By Four Different Actresses
However, some newer fans may not know that Carly has been played by four different actresses: Sarah Joy Brown, Tamara Braun, Jennifer Bransford, and the current Carly, Laura Wright.
Sarah Joy Brown originated the role and played the part of the “bad girl” with precision and fierce determination. No one can argue that Brown is immensely talented.
When Carly first arrived in Port Charles, her goal was to seek revenge on her mother, Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman), for giving her up for adoption and leaving her to be raised by an emotionally abusive alcoholic.
Carly was the character fans loved to hate. She was highly controversial. Carly slept with her mother’s husband and then became pregnant with AJ Quartermaine’s (Sean Kannan) baby.
She then coerced Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) into pretending that the baby belonged to him. At the time, she brought fresh energy and excitement to the soap.
Then, when Brown left the show, Tamara Braun stepped into Carly’s shoes. She humanized Carly more and played her with raw emotion. Braun was exceptional as a more reserved Carly.
Plus, Braun may have had the most natural chemistry with Maurice Benard, who plays Carly’s ex-husband, Sonny Corinthos. However, that’s a subject that is certainly up for debate.
Wright plays the evolved, mature Carly and made the role her own. She is the most lovable version of Carly by far. And I was around for all four Carly’s.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Laura Wright Made the Role Her Own
The reason for my opinion of Wright being the “definitive Carly” is that Wright plays Carly with both fierceness and a softness and sensibility in equal measure.
Wright seems to embody more of the true “Spencer” in Carly, who is more independent, passionate, impulsive, and strong-willed, yet still possesses a heartfelt quality about her.
She’s a mama bear who would lay down and die for her kids, but if you cross her, heaven help you. Carly also takes loyalty vey seriously, which Wright portrays effectively. Wright is the perfect balance of power and compassion.
We’re seeing more of the vengeful side of Carly coming out right now, with the betrayal by her lover, Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna), who recruited her daughter, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), into the WSB.
Carly has also endured significant character growth with Wright’s incarnation. There has been a marked shift in Carly’s self-serving thinking, and now she’s more grounded and perceived as a heroine.
Wright has played Carly the longest. She started on GH in 2005. At this point, it’s difficult to imagine anyone else playing Carly Spencer except Laura Wright.
Of course, Bransford wasn’t exactly right for the part and played Carly during the transition period between Tamara’s Carly and Wright’s version when we learned more about the character’s history.
Some fans say that each Carly brought something unique and valuable to the role. Each was the ideal Carly for whatever particular stage she was at in her life.
Brown put Carly on the map, Braun had the fire, but Wright is now carrying the torch with depth, maturity, and enthusiasm.
