‘General Hospital’ spoilers reveal that this November 4 marks Laura Wright’s twentieth anniversary playing the iconic role of Carly Spencer.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Wright Is The Fourth Actress To Play The Character

Wright started on GH on November 4, 2005. Sarah Brown first played Carly, then Tamara Braun, then Jennifer Bransford briefly took over the role. Finally, Laura Wright settled into Port Charles playing the once-troublemaking vixen turned heroine.

Wright, of course, was no stranger to daytime TV. She first showed up on Loving, playing Ally Rescott on Loving and The City from 1991 to 1997.

Then, she spent time in Springfield playing Cassie Layne on Guiding Light from 1997 to 2005. Wright admitted to Soap Opera Digest that General Hospital was the first soap she had ever been exposed to growing up.

    She told the outlet,

“I felt like I couldn’t wait to play Carly, like all the characters I had before were there because I was going to play Carly.”

Wright shared with Soap Opera Digest in 2023,

“It was the first soap opera I ever watched,”

    she said about GH.

    She continued,

“To play on General Hospital now, playing Bobbie Spencer’s (Jackie Zeman) daughter, and Luke Spencer’s (Tony Geary) niece, it just blows my mind to this day!”

Wright explained that she experienced a sense of serendipity when she met the first Carly, played by Sarah Brown, during a chance encounter at the 1997 Daytime Emmy Awards.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Wright Has Shown Carly’s Character Growth And Maturity

Wright was on Loving, playing Ally Prescott, and Brown was pregnant, playing Carly. The two actresses were talking and laughing in the bathroom.

Brown took her to Wendy Riche, who was then the GH producer, and said, “If I ever leave the show, she needs to play Carly.”

Ironically, years later, Wright got to work with Brown personally, as she returned to the show to play a new character, Claudia Zacchara.

In 2005, fate intervened when Wright was tapped to play the role that would solidify her career when she assumed the role of Carly Corinthos from Tamara Braun.

From the moment Wright set foot in Port Charles, she redefined Carly Corinthos. She hit the ground running and made the role her own.

She created her own vision of who Carly really is at heart, and she never looked back. Wright tapped directly into Carly’s rawness and fire. She demonstrated that Carly could be both tough and vulnerable at the same time.

Plus, Wright has shown Carly’s character growth and maturity in a way no other actress before her has.

    Wright gushed,

“I loved the Carly, Jason, and Sonny dynamic.”

The actress said that, out of all of Carly’s storylines, the death of Carly’s son, Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig), was the most emotionally taxing.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Wrigth’s 20th Anniversary Playing Carly Coincides With November Sweeps

Wright has played Carly for two decades and continues to love Carly for all her unique qualities. She noted,

“I love how real she is. I love that she’s flawed.”

Of course, fans still ship the pairing of Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Carly and believe the two characters belong together.

However, other fans have been enjoying Carly’s ill-fated relationship with Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna). While Carly is currently in the process of developing a revenge plan against Jack, there is no denying that the two of them have chemistry.

Brennan recruited Carly’s daughter, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), to be a spy. Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) recently exposed Jack’s lies. Carly has teamed up with Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) of all people to take Jack down.

It’s going to be exciting to watch the fallout when Jack realizes he messed with the wrong woman’s kid. It’s unfortunate because the soap will inevitably break them up, and it was fun to see Carly truly swept off her feet.

Interestingly, Wright’s 20th anniversary playing Carly on the soap coincides with November sweeps. There may be a Carly-centric episode coming soon to commemorate her time on the show.

As far as her alter ego, Wright has nothing but love for Carly. She beamed,

“Carly, to me, is the best female character in daytime. I love her, and I love every second of it. I love every single person I get to share the stage with. At 55 years old, I am so ready for every experience I get to have on the show, and I feel like the most fortunate person ever.”
