Roger Howarth is one of the most engaging, talented, and brilliant soap actors around. Not to mention, he has a very appealing sense of humor and makes any scene worth watching.
We Hope Nick Doesn’t Kill Matt Before He Has a Real Shot at Redemption
If Y&R gets rid of him by having Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) take Matt out, they are crazy. We think it would be great if the writers gave Matt Clark a good redemption arc.

Now that Matt has amnesia, he has no idea about the horrific crimes he’s committed. He’s been asking a lot of people questions about who he is.
He’s also wondering if he’s really the terrible person Noah Newman (Lucas Adams) claims he is after Noah roughed him up.
However, soaps love to reform villains, especially when they are as adorable and entertaining as all of Howarth’s characters seem to be.
Some soap fans may recall Howarth’s first soap character. For those who aren’t familiar, he played Todd Manning on One Life to Live.
Todd raped someone, but the show somehow redeemed him, and that’s how good of an actor Howarth really is.
Howarth also played Franco Baldwin on General Hospital. Franco started as a serial killer but became a genuinely wonderful guy and even had a popular romance with a fan-favorite character.
If anyone can spin Josh Griffith’s chronically unsalvageable junk into gold, it’s Roger Howarth. Since Matt has lost his memories, we can see that he’s actually a decent human being.
A character with redeeming qualities can remain on a soap opera for a long time to come. Matt has become much more interesting as a guy who can’t remember than the good guys like Nick and Noah.
Howarth Needs a Chance to Shine By Making Matt Truly Sorry for His Actions
Y&R isn’t usually very good at redeeming villains, as Griffith seems to enjoy creating a never-ending stream of truly irredeemable characters, but Howarth can definitely do it.
We are also thrilled that he’s finally had the chance to share scenes with Michelle Stafford, who plays Phyllis Summers. She previously played his love interest, Nina Reeves, on GH.
So now that Matt has no idea who he is, Y&R can gradually make him someone worth rooting for. They can start by having him offer Noah a genuine apology and go from there.’
While we have serious doubts about whether the high-and-mighty Newmans would accept his apology, he can at least try.
Matt has so much to learn about his past choices and where he can go from here. Hopefully, the show gives Howarth a chance to shine by making Matt a redeemable character.
Soap Opera Digest recently interviewed Roger Howarth. He had some good insight into this: “This raises some pretty large questions about whether forgiveness is really possible. And how can someone forgive themselves?”
He added,
“What is it like for somebody who is a horrible person to be confronted with their own horrible self?”
It seems like Y&R may go in the same direction that OLTL and GH went with Todd and Franco. So, Y&R fans may be able to look forward to Howarth remaining a fixture in Genoa City if they decide to go that route. If they are smart, that’s exactly what they will do.
