Y&R’s Phyllis and Matt Are Going to Team Up to Take Down the Newmans?!

On Thursday’s May 7 episode of The Young and the Restless, Phyllis found herself in yet another fiery confrontation with Nick over Victor and the legal mess surrounding Chancellor. But while Nick stormed off declaring he no longer cared what happened to her, something much more dangerous may have quietly started brewing at the Genoa City Athletic Club.

Because the second Matt Clark locked eyes with Phyllis, the energy shifted.

And honestly? It felt like the show was planting the seeds for a potentially explosive partnership against the Newman family.

Matt Wasn’t Just Flirting With Phyllis

The scenes between Matt and Phyllis immediately stood out because Matt suddenly became far more engaged than he had been with anyone else all episode.

Up until then, Matt had mostly wandered around Genoa City confused and cautious, trying to piece together who he was. He questioned Cane at the bar. He quietly listened while Cane and Holden discussed Victor using AI-generated evidence to get Cane arrested. He observed everything.

But once Phyllis sat down nearby ranting about Cane and Victor, Matt’s attention completely locked onto her.

He told Phyllis she had “main character energy,” which definitely sounded flirtatious. But underneath the flirting, there was also genuine fascination. Matt seemed intrigued by her anger, her confidence, and the chaos constantly surrounding her.

Fresh off her brutal fight with Nick, she was in full anti-Newman mode and openly venting about Victor, Cane, and how powerful people in Genoa City always manipulate everyone else.

Nick’s Fight With Phyllis Changed Everything

One of the strongest scenes of the episode happened at Summers Conglomerate when Nick completely unloaded on Phyllis.

Nick warned her that she was heading toward prison and accused her of destroying her own life trying to fight Victor. He even told her she makes it difficult for people to care about her anymore.

Despite all of Phyllis’ bravado, she actually looked shaken after Nick left. For a moment, it felt like she realized she may have finally pushed even Nick too far.

But instead of reflecting, Phyllis immediately walked into the GCAC and found someone new willing to listen to her frustrations.

Matt and Phyllis Already Have a Common Enemy

What makes this pairing so interesting is how naturally their situations already connect.

Phyllis is furious with Victor and the Newmans. She’s convinced they always get away with everything while everyone else pays the price. No matter how many warnings she gets, she refuses to back down.

Meanwhile, Matt may not fully remember who he is yet, but everyone around him is terrified of what happens once he does.

Sienna is convinced he survived. Noah is worried Victor’s security team still hasn’t found him. And Matt himself is slowly piecing together fragments while wandering through Genoa City unnoticed.

That creates a potentially dangerous setup.

If Matt eventually remembers exactly who he is — and what happened — he could easily develop his own issues with the Newman family. And if that happens, Phyllis is sitting right there ready to help fuel that anger.

Nick Seeing Them Together Felt Important

Just as Matt and Phyllis started connecting at the bar, Nick walked into the GCAC and spotted them together.

    That was not random.

The show could have easily ended the interaction before Nick arrived, but instead they made sure viewers saw Nick witnessing the beginning of this strange connection.

And considering Nick already fears Phyllis is spiraling, seeing her bond with a mysterious man tied to a growing crisis in Genoa City probably won’t help matters.

The scary part is that Phyllis has absolutely no idea who Matt really is yet.

To her, he’s just an attractive stranger with memory loss who seems interested in her. But viewers already know Matt is connected to fear, violence, and unfinished business that still has Sienna terrified he’s coming back.

Phyllis May Be Exactly What Matt Needs Right Now

One subtle moment during their conversation could end up becoming very important later.

While talking about Cane, Phyllis started ranting about reinvention — how Cane reinvented himself when he arrived in Genoa City before turning into what she mocked as a “lovesick wimp.”

Matt seemed genuinely drawn to that idea.

And honestly, that makes sense. He currently has no idea who he is, which means he’s vulnerable to becoming whoever someone else influences him to be.

That’s where Phyllis becomes potentially dangerous.

Phyllis has always had a habit of connecting with damaged men and believing she understands them better than everyone else does. Matt fits that pattern perfectly. He’s mysterious, emotionally unstable, isolated, and clearly searching for direction.

At the same time, Matt may see Phyllis as useful too.

She knows Genoa City. She knows the Newman family. And she already wants revenge.

Victor May Have Accidentally Created a Bigger Problem

Ironically, Victor’s relentless pressure campaign against Phyllis may end up pushing her directly toward someone far more dangerous than he realizes.

Nick begged Phyllis to walk away before she loses everything, but Thursday’s episode made it clear she has no intention of stopping. If anything, she seems more determined than ever to fight back against the Newmans.

Now add Matt Clark into that emotional chaos.

A man with missing memories, growing anger, mysterious connections, and unfinished business wandering into Genoa City right as Phyllis feels isolated from almost everyone around her? That does not feel accidental.

And if these two actually decide to work together, the Newmans could soon find themselves dealing with a threat they never saw coming.
