On July 23, 1986, Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, and it was quite the occasion. Like many brides in the 80s, Fergie wore a giant satin dress with long, puffy sleeves.
Sarah Had Her Dress Decorated With Her Coat Of Arms
Sarah’s dress featured a magnificent 17-foot-long beaded train embroidered with A and S initials.
Fergie initially had some bizarre ideas for her wedding dress that the designer refused to create, including decorative teddy bears and helicopters.
The helicopters she requested were likely to honor the groom, who had previously served as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy.
Several former Palace workers have revealed how Prince Andrew collected teddy bears and proudly displayed them on his bed. No one ever said the Duke of York was normal.
Charlotte Briggs, a former Buckingham Palace maid, explained. She was told about Andrew’s teddy bear infatuation as soon as she got the job. They had to be perfectly arranged.
“The teddies had to be in a certain order on his four-poster bed, from the largest at the back down to the smallest at the front. All 72 of them.”
All ridiculous requests aside, the wedding had all the pomp and circumstance you’d expect from a royal wedding.
In the end, Sarah’s dress was decorated with thistles and a bumblebee from the bride’s coat of arms and anchors to illustrate Andrew’s naval career.
Sarah wore the York tiara, which was given to her as a gift from Queen Elizabeth. The tiara is made of platinum and adorned with diamonds and leaf details.
The almost 2,000 guests included US First Lady Nancy Reagan, actor Michael Cain, TV host Joan Rivers, and singer Elton John.
The Marriage Didn’t Last, But The Friendship Did
Fergie arrived in the Glass Coach with her father, Major Ronald Ferguson. Prince Edward was Andrew’s best man. Four-year-old Prince William served as a pageboy. One of the bridesmaids was five-year-old Zara Tindall, Princess Anne’s daughter.
Once the ceremony was over, Andrew and Sarah stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, and the crowd cheered, “Give us a kiss!” As a joke, Andrew and Fergie pretended they didn’t hear them until finally they locked lips.
After the reception, Andrew and Sarah made a grand exit, as 24,000 rose petals were present, along with a giant teddy bear just for Andrew.
The impressively sizeable rum-soaked cake was seven feet tall and covered with lovely white, pink, and blush flowers.
Sarah and Princess Diana were childhood friends, and she set Fergie up with Andrew. The two women were seated next to each other at a lunch during Royal Ascot in 1985, and the two got along famously.
Andrew and Sarah had two wonderful daughters: Princess Beatrice, born in August 1988, and Princess Eugenie, born in March 1990.
By 1992, the couple’s marital issues took their toll, and Andrew and Sarah divorced. It was the same year that Charles and Diana ended their marriage, prompting Queen Elizabeth to give her famous “Annus Horribilis” speech.
Interestingly, to this day, Andrew and Sarah still live together at Royal Lodge. Inside sources say,
“They spend all their time together, adore their children, and never argue.”
