Sarah Ferguson shared a hilarious story on the podcast “Thorton’s White Wine Question Time.” Recounting a wild night she and Princess Diana had at the Duchess of York’s bachelorette party in July 1986.
Parks Police Arrested Fergie’s Entourage
Fergie’s entourage dressed up as police officers and went to a club. However, they were refused service because, apparently, the club was supposed to be “just for fun.”
They tried to sit down, and the waiter promptly explained to the pair that the club was a members-only one and didn’t serve police officers.
After they left the club, Parks Police arrested the group for impersonating police officers. In the UK, it’s illegal to impersonate law enforcement. “Princess Diana’s costume was very good,” she exclaimed.
The Crown Prosecution Service reports that the maximum penalty for doing so is six months in jail or a hefty fine.
Sarah and Diana hid their engagement rings in the presence of the officers. Once in the van, Princess Diana spotted smoky bacon-flavored crisps and started to eat them. The police officer looked at her in astonishment and yelled, “You can’t do that!”
Once the officers recognized that they were royalty, they released them. The mayhem continued from that point as the group headed to the Mayfair Club Annabel’s, where Prince Andrew was said to be partying.
They never did run into the Duke of York, but they decided to “play a trick on him by shutting the Buckingham Palace Gates and as he approached his car, making him fear an ambush.”
That night, Diana and Fergie donned grey wigs and were dressed as policewomen. They pretended to arrest a prostitute outside Buckingham Palace.
Fergie said that Queen Elizabeth laughed riotously when she found out what happened. Sarah said the two women were inseparable and always got into trouble when they were together.
Sarah And Diana Met When They Were Teenagers
Long before Diana and Fergie were married into the royal family and became sisters-in-law, they met as teenagers and were as quickly thick as thieves.
Princess Diana reportedly set Fergie up with Andrew. The (then) Princess of Wales believed that Sarah, who was the fun-loving daughter of (then) Prince Charles’s polo manager, would hit it off with “Randy Andy.”
She was right. Despite having known each other socially, Sarah and Andrew had only briefly crossed paths and didn’t know each other very well.
The former friends were reacquainted in June 1985. Diana received permission from the Queen to invite Fergie to the Palace.
Andrew and Sarah were seated next to each other for a luncheon at Windsor Castle during the week of Royal Ascot. They got along famously. Andrew and Fergie got engaged in February 1986.
After Fergie and Andrew divorced, Diana and Charles ended their marriage, and Diana and Sarah spent even more time together.
After Sarah’s divorce was finalized in August 1996, the two royals went on vacation to the South of France with their children.
There were rumors that Diana and Sarah had a falling out. However, Ferguson said, “There was never any daylight between us.” Sarah said the two women promised each other they’d be there for one another, and they always were.
