‘General Hospital’ star Maurice Benard is no stranger to being vulnerable in front of the camera. In his role as Sonny Corinthos, he’s had to deal with some tense moments, as well as emotionally charged stories.
For example, the recent Alzheimer’s story led to Max Gail (Mike Corbin) winning a Daytime Emmy. Plus, he bears his soul regularly on State of Mind. But he recently opened up on a whole other level. Let’s see some highlights of what we learned.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) Opens Up About His Recent Struggles
For a bit now, Benard has mentioned having particularly bad struggles during the shutdown. He mentioned to Lisa LoCicero (Olivia Falconeri) on State of Mind that he was beyond the point of meditation and other methods to get his mental and physical well-being in order.
This has all been danced around, though. Until now. In an interview with TheChristophersBlog.org, he revealed just how bad things got.
The blog post is just a sampling of what you’ll learn in podcast episodes, which is linked at the end of their blog. But let’s get into a few things we found particularly interesting about the chat.
Life Imitates Art For Maurice Benard
Before we get into some of what he said about 2020, let’s touch on one moment that apparently hit the actor hard. In the interview, he speaks of his own father receiving an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in the midst of this storyline and the shutdown.
It’s a tragic twist that we wish him and his family the best on Benard opening up about this personal moment brings a new appreciation for the emotion behind that story. And it shows why Benard mentioned being so emotional after a reading with Gail.
But more importantly, this storyline was authentic to the actor in another way. He’s made no secret about his commitment to mental health and being an advocate for awareness.
So, no we see how playing out this story was an extension, in a way, of his other work. And judging by the comments we’ve seen from people over the course of that storyline, it really helped a lot of families dealing with the disease as well.
Maurice Benard’s Dark Days
In some ways, the interview covered a lot of what we’d already heard the actor talk about on State of Mind. Maurice Benard once more detailed the early days of his mental health struggles, while also talking about how the team behind GH helped him through some of his more difficult days. And the actor revealed he had some almost as bad as his initial struggle, thanks to the lockdown.
He spoke openly about making sure he had family around because he was afraid of what he might do when he was alone. And the actor admitted things eventually got to the point he was planning out how to end his suffering.
However, he eventually reached out and got the help he needed, and he used the story as a warning to others—don’t wait as he did.
We’re glad to see the actor’s in a totally different place now, as he expressed a new joy in the interview that comes from the work he did to heal. Check out the link above to listen to the whole thing, and check out his State of Mind chats on Sundays.
