Maurice Benard’s State of Mind changed things up a bit this week. He still had a guest speaking candidly about mental health and their careers, but this time, he had a little surprise for fans at the end. In fact, this turned into two surprises. Let’s talk what happened.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: This week’s guest
For Maurice Benard’s State of Mind this week, the actor, who plays Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital didn’t stray too far from the set. Sort of. This week, he had Kate Grahn on the show. She’s the daughter of Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis). They actually spoke a bit of him seeing her on set when younger and a bit about her relationship with her mother. Spoiler alert—they’re best friends. But she does go into a little more detail than that in the interview.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: Starting out
While her mother is an actress, Kate has chosen a different path. She went to music school and released an EP this year following her graduation. The EP is a collection that details her battle with OCD as well as other topics.
Despite just getting started, she isn’t exactly new to music, either. According to a Soaps in Depth article, the singer released a song previously, as well as having something she wrote and performed chosen for Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. She credits her mom’s support with allowing her to follow her love of music as well as getting her on stage over the years.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind: The chat
As for the chat itself, she spoke in depth about dealing with OCD and the med that helped her to get things under control. Kate also opened up about the moment that made her realize she needed to get back into therapy and how her mother supported her through that. Benard was fascinated by a lot of what she had to say and credited her with helping him learn more about the condition. Check out the video above to see more of the conversation.
This week was a bit different in one respect. After they finished chatting, Benard invited Grahn to perform a song. She had chosen “Unraveling,” which is the song we mentioned talking about her struggle with OCD. It was a powerful performance, and Benard was impressed by her vocals. But there was even more in store for fans.
After the talk came out on YouTube, another video followed the same day. In it, Benard’s son, Joshua, joined Kate for a performance of “Shallow” from A Star is Born. You can see their performance above. Stay tuned to see who stops by next, and what other surprises he might start adding to the mix.
