The war on comedians seems to continue. Next up is Ricky Gervais who is no stranger to saying inappropriate things that are hilarious. In his new Netflix stand up special ‘SuperNature’, he has already drawn criticism for his strong of ‘transphobic jokes’.
Just a few moments into the special he goes in on the difference between women of ten years ago and the women of today, joking about transgenders that have a penis and a beard but are ‘women’. He then ties this in with Kevin Hart’s tweets that got him removed from the Oscars and says that there is no way someone ten years ago would have predicted that saying women have a womb would be offensive.
Comedian Ricky Gervais Is Now Catching Flack For His Graphic Transgender Jokes
At the end of the special, he offers his chance to defend his jokes about transgenders, saying, “Full disclosure: In real life of course I support trans rights. I support all human rights, and trans rights are human rights. Live your best life. Use your preferred pronouns. Be the gender that you feel that you are. But meet me halfway, ladies: Lose the cock. That’s all I’m saying.”
Of course, the Twitter mob was on him within minutes for joking about transgenders instead of governments or banks, but a comedian’s whole job is to joke about the culture, what’s going on and what’s popular. There’s no doubt that right now the transgender movement is a huge part of the culture, incredibly relevant, and being talked about everywhere… From a business aspect, why would you leave something like that out if it’s so popular?
Comedians mock and make fun of everything, just look at Dave Chappelle’s white face and the voice he uses… It’s absolutely hilarious. Why can he joke about one thing but not the other? The same goes for Ricky, he’ll mock whatever is popular and relevant.
Of course, being included in jokes and being supported by Gervais and Chappelle isn’t enough, and is deemed ‘dangerous’. If they’re teasing you and including you, they probably care about you. There’s no hate behind their voice, they’re just jokes. Take it like everyone else.
