Queen Elizabeth’s long time husband Prince Philip will be laid to rest next Saturday in a very low-key ceremony, but it will still be “colorful and steeped in tradition.” Here’s what you need to know.

Before his death, the Duke of Edinburgh spent four weeks in the hospital, which was his longest stay ever. He was transferred briefly in early March to a specialist cardiac center at another London hospital, where he underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition.

Harry, the Duke of Sussex, will attend his grandfather’s funeral, but his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, won’t be present.

Sources say that Prince Philip’s long-standing funeral plans had been adapted to respect certain coronavirus restrictions, with all the usual elements that involve contact with the public removed. Current Covid rules in England limit the number of people who can attend funerals to 30.

It’s also been noted that his coffin will be carried by a Land Rover from Windsor Castle to St. George’s Chapel for the ceremony.

On the day of the funeral, the coffin will be moved from the private chapel to the State Entrance of Windsor Castle.

It will be placed on a modified Land Rover, that the duke himself helped design, to be carried the short distance to St George’s Chapel. The procession will begin at 2:45 p.m. (9:45 a.m. ET) and will be led from Windsor Castle by a band of grenadier guards.

The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen. They wed at Westminster Abbey in 1947 in a televised ceremony that transfixed millions of viewers around the world. and the queen have four children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
