Prince Philip’s death has led to tributes from around the world as numerous political figures have paid their respects to the late Royal.

Philip had been going through a health crisis, and it was not a secret that things were looking very ominous. During this month-long stay in the hospital, there were conflicting reports about how Philip was doing. So when the news of his passing was announced, although it was difficult for the public to stomach, it was not a surprise.

In an official statement, the Royals said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” Senior political figures have responded to the news. Former President Barack Obama came out and shared some warm words.

He was fully aware of Philip, given he had made numerous state visits to the Royals. During his time as President, he first met Philip in 2009. In a post to his followers on Twitter, the former President wrote: “Through his extraordinary example, His Royal Highness Prince Philip proved that true partnership has room for both ambition and selflessness — all in service of something greater.

“Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Family and the British people.” Moving from across the globe, to those closer to home, the current British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also praised Philip for his public service. Philip had been a member of the navy during the Second World War. His services were recognised as he received numerous awards for his contribution, including the Greek War Cross of Valour.

Throughout his time, he was known for the boldness of his comments- even when they did get him into serious bother. In an official statement, the Prime Minister said: “Our thoughts are with Her Majesty and her family…We are a kingdom united in both grief and gratitude. [There is] grief at Prince Philip’s passing and gratitude for his decades of selfless service to the country.”
