John Madden, the Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster who was the weekly voice of football for three decades has died at the age of 85. The league has said that he died unexpectedly and did not detail a cause.

Madden gained fame with his decadelong stint as the coach of the Oakland Raiders, making it to seven AFC titles games and winning the SUper Bowl in the 1976 season. He has the best winning percentage among NFL coaches with more than 100 games, at .759 and a 103-32-7 regular-season record.

Many have spoken out already, including NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who released an official statement saying,

“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families. We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was devoted husband, father and grandfather.”

Goodell continued. saying that no one loved football more than the Coach, “He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”

Many have already called for EA Sports to make Madden the cover of the acclaimed series he helped create, Madden NFL 23′ next year. It would be a shame if they did not represent him on the cover of a game he fought so hard to have the official 11 on 11 team structure that seems so obvious nowadays.

Rest in peace John Madden and thank you for making the game of football so special for so many people.
