In the world of sports, things for the Raiders have been a little intense lately. The former head coach, Jon Gruden is now suing the NFL for leaking some emails that he sent to others in the NFL. His lawsuit alleges that the NFL, along with commissioner, Roger Goodell, ‘orchestrated a malicious campaign to selectively leak’ these offensive emails that he sent in 2011 to 2018.

Jon Gruden: The Emails in Question

Gruden ended up resigning last month after these emails were sent to the president of the NFL, Bruce Allen. They were posted in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. The NFL has continued to deny that they were the ones who leaked the emails.

The emails were racist, homophobic, and misogynistic. There were 650,000 emails that leaked and this is what started the research into sexual harassment allegations, along with working in a hostile environment.

In a statement given by Gruden’s lawyer, Adam Hosmer-Henner, he states, “The complaint alleges that the defendants selectively leaked Gruden’s private correspondence to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times in order to harm Gruden’sreputation and force him out of his job. There is no explanation or justification for why Gruden’s emails were the only ones made public out of the emails collected in the NFL’s investigation of the Washington Football Team or for why the emails were held for months before being released in the middle of the Raiders’ season.”

When the emails were leaked, they included some slurs that were unbelievable! One email was talking about the African-American players’ union’s executive director, DeMaurice Smith. He wrote that he had ‘lips the size of Michelin tires’. He also called Roger Goodell a ‘f****r’.

Part of this hostile workplace investigation also shows that the day-to-day workplace was not one where women wanted to be. There were emails that featured some signs of sexual harassment leaked as well.

Gruden has been pretty quiet since the emails were leaked, but now he is trying to clear his name. It doesn’t look as if he has a lot to stand on considering the country has seen these emails now. He told HBO, “People who know me know what I stand for for 58 years. I have a resume of 58 years. The truth will come out. It’s certainly cryptic.”

Goodell also made the statement, “I do think he has been held accountable and the organization has been held accountable.”
