Meghan Markle wasted no time in reading her children’s book, “The Bench” during her visit to a New York City elementary school with her husband Prince Harry by her side this past weekend. Here’s what you need to know.
The Duchess of Sussex sure made the most out of her trip to the Big Apple, as she and Harry paid a visit to P.S. 123 Mahalia Jackson School in Harlem, where Meghan read her book, “The Bench” to a group of second graders. Harry took a seat on the ground alongside the students.

The Sussexes went to the school to promote early childhood education and literacy, and were joined by New York City Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter.
Of course, it didn’t take very long for Meghan’s critics to weigh in on the matter. Many of them took to their social media accounts to comment with, “Meghan is dressed in very expensive clothing as she reads her kiddie book to financially disadvantaged children who have to receive meals at school.
Is this a woke moment?” along with, “Well that baby book is a way to young for those children…most of them will be reading books with more than 1 sentence and some of the kids will be reading what we used to call chapter books when i was working as a aide at our local elementary.”
Another critic pointed out: “Why are they acting like they’re important members of the royal family on tour? They’re only woke celebrities now. And until they stop trashing the Royal Family to earn a buck, they can only be considered very disingenuous. This trip is a cheap imitation of Diana’s trip to New York in 1989. Diana famously hugged the child with Aids on this visit and changed how the world thought of Aids at that time. She didn’t self promote her own book.”
