‘General Hospital’ spoilers give kudos to Van Hansis and Kelly Thieabaud for nailing the scene where Britt Westbourne helped Lucas Jones realize that Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) murdered Marco Rios (Adrian Anchondo).
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Hansis Portrayed Lucas’s Grief, Shock, and Regret Masterfully
In the April 1st episode of GH, Britt was in her office when Lucas arrived. Britt is already experiencing the effects of being without her life-sustaining Huntington’s medication, as her hand was shaking.
Lucas informed Britt that Cullum was conscious but had no memory of who shot him. Britt assumed that Lucas stopped by to give her hell for Marco’s death.
However, Lucas blamed himself for Marco’s death. Lucas asked Britt about her meds, and Britt had to explain to him that Cullum had cruelly stomped on them on the pier.
Lucas cried, exclaiming, “So Marco’s death was for nothing!” They wondered how Cullum knew she was on the pier.
As they began to realize that Cullum had seen Lucas’s message on Marco’s phone, the scene shifted. Lucas spiraled emotionally and broke down, knowing that Cullum was Marco’s killer.
Hansis was brilliant in the scene as he masterfully conveyed Lucas’s shock and regret over the fact that he not only worked very hard to save Cullum’s life after he was shot, but he wasn’t with Marco when he needed Lucas.
Lucas cried that maybe he could have done something, maybe his intervention or even his being there would have made a difference or given Marco the will to fight.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Britt and Lucas Are Together In This Now
He stood there, utterly defeated, sobbing with a mixture of grief, regret, and anger toward himself for being directly responsible for Marco’s violent death. Britt took Lucas in her arms and gently comforted him as he sobbed uncontrollably.
Thiebaud and Hansis were brilliantly heartbreaking, real, and raw, as Britt embraced Lucas, assuring him that it wasn’t his fault and somehow it would be okay.
Hansis did a wonderful job demonstrating Lucas’s immense guilt and profound grief. We could see the range of Lucas’s shifting emotions, from shock and disbelief to devastation.
Hansis made us feel for a man who had tragically lost the man he loved as he simultaneously saved his lover’s killer.
In one moment, Lucas and Britt went from comical adversaries to being bonded for life through their shared grief over the ordeal and the fact that they were forced to face the danger they are still very much in.
What was so clear in that moment is that Britt and Lucas are in this together now. As they both reeled from the tragic consequences of their failed plan, they realized they had both lost something important to them.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Thiebaud and Hansis Beautifully Portrayed Britt and Lucas’s Developing Bond and the Sense of Injustice They Both Feel
Lucas lost Marco forever, and Britt lost access to the very medicine that keeps her functional, whole, and alive.
Plus, she lost her own lover when Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) was shackled and carted off to God knows where by the WSB.
Lucas had believed that he and Marco had a future together, but he was robbed of it, and Hansis portrayed Lucas’s loss of Marco and subsequent discovery of his killer with a brutal sense of injustice, as we saw the depth of his grief.
Meanwhile, Thiebaud played Britt’s compassion for Lucas, her own sense of injustice, and her fear over their situation flawlessly, with the perfect measure of sincerity. It was an impressive tour de force for both actors.
It’s going to be interesting to see where Lucas and Britt’s developing bond goes from here, as Thiebaud and Hansis deserve high praise and recognition for their beautifully portrayed scenes together yesterday.
