The Johnny Depp v Amber Heard trial has already had some strange happenings, but this one may take the cake. Dr. David R. Spiegel was called on to testify for Heard’s defense team and he may have dug her an even deeper hole with his strange and bizarre musings.
During the back and forth between Depp’s lawyers and Spiegel, he continued to speak about different traits of a narcissist and how Depp had exhibited these before. However, the issue (and it’s a big one) is that Spiegel has NEVER spoken to Johnny firsthand and is basing this armchair diagnosis on interviews and films that Johnny has been a part of.

While Spiegel was interviewed on the stand you can see Depp and his attorneys smiling and laughing at Spiegel’s answers that he has no basis for. He is supposed to be a professional and doctor, yet he’s never once examined Johnny first-hand, spoken with him or even met him it seems. How is he supposed to be an expert witness on Johnny’s mental health?
He spoke in circles and one of his answers was based on a test, the mini-mental status exam (MMSE), which has a drawing portion of the test which Johnny had never drawn for Spiegel. So, how is Spiegel forming a result of Depp’s mental state on an incomplete piece of data? Spiegel also has no idea what score out of 30 Depp received on the exam.
Depp scored 27 out of 30 on the test, and Spiegel has no idea what the three points he missed were. His ramblings and terrible hair was the centerpiece of the court today and people couldn’t stop talking about it. This looks like a big win for Depp and Heard’s team should feel foolish for putting this man on the stand.
