‘Beyond the Gates’ spoilers applaud BTG and Tamra Tunie for their portrayal of Anita Dupree’s groundbreaking cancer storyline. We appreciate that the soap is taking a very realistic and educational approach.
‘Beyond the Gates’ Spoilers: Anita’s Heartbreaking Diagnosis Highlights How Cancer Affects Black Women Differently
What many other soaps can’t seem to accomplish when they educate their viewers is the ability to tell a story like this without being preachy or coming off like a cheesy PSA.
By using Anita’s heartbreaking diagnosis to highlight how cancer affects black women differently, it informs us and teaches us, which should always be the central aspect of any story involving cancer.
Plus, it’s given powerhouse actress Tamara Tunie a chance to shine. The type of cancer that Anita has is called Triple triple-negative breast cancer.
It’s a very aggressive form of cancer and has a high recurrence rate. Anita showed vulnerability, was fearful, but determined to fight. The scene of her crying upon learning the news from her doctor was so powerful and moving.
Then, when Anita broke the news to her husband, Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis), we could see the fear written all over his face.
However, we also saw that Vernon was steadfast and unwavering in his love for his cherished wife. He told her, “Don’t you dare try to shoulder this alone. Give it to me.”
Vernon stressed that their children needed to be told, but Anita insisted they celebrate Christmas as a family the right way first.
It was a grand event as Vernon revealed he had been taking singing lessons from Anita’s fellow Articulette, Sharon Winger (Bonita Brisker), to impress his wife.
Vernon sang a beautiful rendition of Christmas Carols, as it was the calm before the inevitable storm. The family enjoyed the holiday, not knowing their matriarch was suffering from a devastating blow.
‘Beyond the Gates’ Spoilers: The Acting and Writing Involved Are Superb
In the December 30th episode of BTG, Anita told her two daughters, Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley) and Nicole Dupree (Daphnee Duplaix), about her diagnosis.
Dani and Nicole were visibly shaken, but Anita remained stoic and hopeful that she would beat this insidious disease.
Meanwhile, Vernon explained the situation to Dani’s husband, Andre Richardson (Sean Freeman), who vowed to support his wife through the ordeal.
Vernon and Andre shared a moment when Dani’s father expressed his gratitude that Dani finally had a partner who truly deserved her.
It was a realistic portrayal of the way a family reacts in the face of an illness as serious as cancer, and preparing for the arduous battle ahead.
Bravo to BTG for offering a realistic, relatable storyline that prominently features the issue of African American health and for educating the audience.
It raises awareness, but the dramatic impact is felt just as strongly. The family dynamics involved raise the stakes.
The information presented and the performances delivered by all the actors involved in this storyline have all been masterful.
Tamara Tunie is about to do some of her best, most important work by advocating for cancer patients, and offering an honest portrayal, helping those who are suffering to feel less alone in the world.
Tunie has shown the depth of her talent and range with this story so far, and we expect that she’ll win an Emmy for her stellar performance.
