ABC ‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers reveal we’ve been seeing a different side to Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) lately. And we’re not just talking about his State of Mind chats on YouTube.
He’s been in a totally different situation on the show lately, living as “Mike” in Pennsylvania, as he can’t remember his old life. Recently Benard opened up on Twitter about playing this other character. He also got fans going with a poll. Let’s take a look at what he had to say and what the reaction in.

So, we have noted how different the character is without his memory. We’ve also talked about how this new man has been winning over Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros). But now, the actor himself weighed in on his new challenge on screen.
On his Twitter account, the actor wrote, “I wanted different energy something totally different with Mike than what I do with Sonny. I can imagine people don’t like change. But after playing the same character for 28 years, I’m having a lot of fun, and I love @watroswatros.”
We loved how he both acknowledged how some fans aren’t happy about this recent development, while also talking about how important it was for him as an actor to shake things up. And we like that he inferred he’s had an active role in developing this other side to Sonny. It’s always fun to see what happens when people collaborate like this.

The response was swift and divided, with most preferring the Gangster. However, there were quite a few fans that were torn, as they liked both sides to Sonny, while others were enjoying the Cowboy change. Let’s take a look at a few of the responses from fans.

One Titter user wrote, “As a #CarSon & Sonny fan, I’m enjoying the story. Maurice has chemistry with everyone, including Nina. I know there will be lots of drama for Carly and Sonny, but I also know their love for each other is strong. In the meantime, Carly gets to play mob boss while Sonny steps back!”
“@watroswatros I am absolutely loving your recent work with Mo! @MauriceBenard is so lit up and supported in his scenes with you! And your Auntie is now smitten w Scott? AWESOME! @gatitweets @kinshriner,” added another.
As for the other side of things, one said, “Gangster all the way. Not to limit @MauriceBenard to gangster roles just has the looks of a Godfather type of a mob family! I also think he has a NYPD look about him as well. But when he goes completely grey he’d make a great casino dealer with those dimples and shifty eyes!”
Personally? We are preferring this new version. Maybe it’s just the change of pace, but there’s something about Benard’s performance that makes us love “Mike” and want him to continue living a happy, blissfully unaware life in Nixon Falls.
However, we know that’s not going to happen, so we’re looking forward to all the material this plot twist will bring. Because you know the truth will come out, and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) will be out for revenge in a huge way.
And it should be fun to see what Sonny makes of the mess left in his absence, not to mention how he’ll react to Boss!Carly. And let’s not forget all the implications for the characters and Sonny’s organization after everything that happened. There’s so much to work with, we should be getting a long fallout ahead.
