After people all around the world were wondering why Will Smith wasn’t asked to leave the Oscars after assaulting Chris Rock on stage, we now have an answer. As it turns out, he was asked to leave and he just flat out refused. Why it didn’t escalate from there, I’m not sure, but he got away with it. Is it because he’s Will Smith? Maybe.
In a letter from the Academy, they wrote,
“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
Will Smith REFUSED To Leave The Academy Awards Even After Being Told To By Officials!
Now, sources who were present at the awards say that 2 Academy officials told Will Smith to leave, David Rubin, the PRESIDENT OF THE ACADEMY, and Dawn Hudson the CEO. It’s said that they were absolutely furious with Will and his actions and that there was plenty of yelling and heated discussions backstage after the incident.
However, as one source from TMZ explained, they told him to leave shortly after the slap, but he refused.
Not only does it seem he got away with his actions completely clean… what makes it worse is that he was initially confronted and punished but apparently he just chose not to listen like a 4-year-old toddler.
The Board explains that one their next meeting on April 18th, they will have a decision on Will Smith’s punishment which could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions. There are rumors that he will have to forfeit his Oscar award that he won later on after the slap.
The Academy also tweeted out that they do not condone violence of any form. Well, it certainly seems like you do. If they tighten their boots, they will make an example out of Smith and show the rest of the celebs that that is not how you behave at their award show. Of course, if this goes unpunished, we might expect more of this in the future.
What do you think? How are they going to punish Will Smith and will it be enough for his actions? Let us know in the comments below.
