‘Sonic 2‘ is already the highest-grossing video game movie ever in the United States. Star and voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz has pointed out that the sequel has outperformed the first Sonic movie which previously held the record. ‘Sonic 2’ has already hit $147 million compared to the original $146 million.
The film won the domestic weekend box office outperforming Marvel property ‘Morbius’ with Jared Leto and ‘The Lost City’.
Starring Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, and Ben Schwartz, the film has a lot of name recognition behind it along with the rumor that this could be Jim Carrey’s final film!

Carrey said ahead of the release that this could be his last movie ever saying, “I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.” Paramount has already said that they would never consider trying to replace him (that would be impossible).
As for the next films, Ben Schwartz is said to be returning again as Sonic and Elba as Knuckles, who will even be getting his own spin-off show as a Sonic cinematic universe was announced back in February.
With a bit more time, it’s likely that ‘Sonic 2’s numbers will continue to rise and it will be difficult for another video game film to overtake its record, no to mention, be a decent video game film. As a gamer myself, it’s hard to find good films about them. Sure, I’m a sucker for 1995’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Warcraft’, but they aren’t exactly good films, instead almost solely relying on references. Sure, they’re fun, but ‘Sonic’ did an amazing job at balancing being a good movie and including plenty of references and even changing the character design after terrible viewer feedback.
