Iranian game developers are receiving a ton of backlash online after a video game in with the objective is to save the life of George Floyd. It’s been called “Save The Freedom”, and the mobile game is based on the killing of George Floyd by police officer Derek Chauvin in Minnesota in May 2020.
The killing sparked protests and riots around the country and even crossed oceans. Developed over the past year by Iran’s Basij paramilitary force – a branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps = at the behest of IRGC General Mohammad Reza Naghdi, he expressed the idea at a digital conference, “proposing a game where players save “this black citizen from American police.”
A Video Game About George Floyd Is Receiving Total Outrage Online
The game itself sees players work their way through 30 levels, facing enemies who are trying to kill George Floyd. This has sparked intense backlash on social media with people calling the game “degrading”, “sick” and “disgusting.”
It remains to be seen what will happen with the game. It definitely sounds like that with the backlash, the developers will have no choice but to drop it altogether.
Freelance journalist Séamus Malekafzali shared the news on his Twitter page, captioning it with “Iran’s Basij has unveiled a new mobile video game about saving George Floyd from being murdered by police.”

People were quick to comment, “what the hell. Why are they making his murder seem like a game and as a way to make money. Disgusting“, and “Is there anything people won’t try and profit from?” While others saw this happen before, even brand name games like ‘Call of Duty, “Is this something new? Have you ever taken a look at the Battlefield or Call of Duty series where you “invade” Iraq and kill “terrorists” as a part of the game? Last I checked these game companies were US based. Making money off murder and invasion have always been there.”
