YouTuber JoJo Siwa Sparks Major BlackFace Controversy Amidst Black Lives Matter (BLM) Protests!

Okay so did anyone take JoJo Siwa aside at any time when she was filming her video for Non-Stop and tell her that blackface was not a good idea? For anyone? Ever? I get that the video was probably filmed a few months before the whole Black Lives Matter protests but there’s a thing called reshooting and scenes that should be left on the cutting room floor and no one thought to do that.

In the video for Non-Stop, there’s a circus theme and it looks like there is this one very pale little girl in the back who is honestly reminiscent of Shirley Temple who is made-up in what appears to be blackface. I feel sorry for this little girl because clearly it was not her choice to be made up like this and if she were supposed to be a circus animal then there are other ways of conveying that. All the make-up artist had to do was youtube some make-up looks or make some different color choices and it not only would have been clear as to what animal the little girl was, but it would have also not made JoJo look quite so bad.

YouTuber JoJo Siwa makes a huge mistake

JoJo is 17 and I’m not sure how involved she is in the actual production of her videos or if there are other people on her team that make the production choices for her. She’s learning and this could be a teachable moment for her to not ever make one of her performers do blackface ever again. But this argument also comes as a double-edge sword, the fact of the matter is, she’s 17. The fact that she saw this little girl’s makeup and didn’t automatically think, “Oh that could be construed as racist.” is kind of worrisome. I get that not everyone’s forte is history but come on, it’s 2020, we need to move toward some more sensitive media portrayals, starting with the younger generation. Also if the little girl was supposed to be a monkey – there are masks for that. There is no need to make her do blackface.

I hope that someone on the team comes out with a statement apologizing for the lack of racial sensitivity in that video. JoJo is getting a lot of hate for it and she should not have to shoulder all the burden of that. That being said, the costume, whatever it was supposed to be, was just badly done. It was a little girl who had brown on her face (which honestly looked like she’d gotten into her Mom’s chocolate LUSH mask and forgotten about it when she went out to play) but literally aside from maybe the pattern in which this makeup was applied, nothing else indicated that she was supposed to be a circus animal. Her hair was not done up in little animal ears, she didn’t have an animal-eared headband, there was no tail attached to her (that I could see) she was just there in brown face, for no apparent reason. If not JoJo someone needs to come out and say what exactly the kid was supposed to be. Geeze. We’ll keep following this one for you, stay tuned!!!
