In the midst of all the big youtubers getting cancelled lately, we can add another one to the list. Jenna Marbles has decided to quit the platform and private a lot of her old content because she said that she did not want to hurt people. But the thing is, can you really be cancelled of you do it of your own volition to yourself? I mean, I guess you can seeing as Jenna has decided to move on from the platform. But did she really have anything to apologize for? Actually yes, she did.
Upon further research it was revealed that in a 2011 video that she dressed in ‘blackface’ while doing a video where she imitated Nikki Minaj. Apparently there were more problematic videos, but that is one of the ones that received the most flack. She privated and may have even deleted that video since then. She’s not proud of her past, problematic content and has come out with an apology video that she has stated that anyone can use in reference to her. She is very emotional throughout the video and clearly regrets her past decisions.

Youtuber Jenna Marbles cancels herself and quits youtube!
Was this worth a full-on self-cancellation though? She says that she is not sure if she is leaving the platform forever and as someone who has enjoyed her non-problematic content I fully hope that that is the case. I hope that Jenna can eventually come back to the platform eventually and continue to make the non-problematic, fun content that her channel has come to be famous for. Like, dyeing her crocs, or telling us which zodiac signs wear what underwear. Those were fun videos and not anywhere during those particular videos was anyone targeted or made to feel awful.
Going forward I think all youtube content creators should strive to make their videos as funny, but also as socially aware as possible. Its not that hard to make content that is funny without targeting other people. But let’s face it, if something was made a decade or so ago we also have to remember that things back in 2010-20111 were not as ‘woke’ as they are now so we also have to give these content creators credit for learning and growing as people during that decade. I never saw this problematic content that Jenna produced, I was not a subscriber, but I will say that during the time that I have watched her she has definitely changed as a person. The sad product of cancel culture is when you refuse to allow people to make mistakes and grow from them you sometimes lose them entirely. Let’s hope 2021 can be less about cancelling and more about moving on and forgiving. There’s only so much apologizing that can be done.
