Ryan Garcia is one of the best young boxing talents in the world, but now he is opening up about his mental health struggles and admitting that at one point in his life, he actually felt like killing himself. During an interview with Dan Canobbio on ‘Inside Boxing Live’, Garcia opened up saying,

“When I was deep in it, I didn’t think I was gonna live. I was so depressive and I went to bad habits. I started drinking, and I never drink, ever. But I was getting drunk all the time. I wanted to kill myself at one point.”

The 23-year-old boxer withdrew from his scheduled bout against Javier Fortuna last April, explaining he needed a break to focus on his mental health. He last fought in January of 2021, where he defeated Luke Campbell by knockout.

When his thoughts were scattered and even contemplating suicide, Garcia knew he needed a break. He said that he knows his depression came from mismanaging stress and taking on too many things at once. Thankfully, he received the help he needed and is feeling great now.

He will even be returning to the ring this year, on April 9th against Emmanuel Tagoe.

While we’re glad Garcia is doing well now with his mental health, he still has his haters who are convinced that this was a stunt so he could take more time and avoid certain fights. In the interview above where he speaks about his mental health, he also continues to talk down on other people in the sport and seems very condescending, making it more difficult to appreciate his story.
