We’ve got good news for Aussie soap fans! Neighbours is returning to television with a brand new series on Amazon Freevee just months after the Australian soap aired its final episode. The long-running soap had closed out its 37-year onscreen run with a special episode featuring many familiar famous faces, including stars Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, Jason Donovan and Natalie Imbruglia. Here’s what you need to know.
It’s been reported that a revitalized series will return to Ramsay Street on Amazon Freevee in the UK and US, in the second half of the year. Viewers will also be able to watch thousands of episodes from previous seasons.
Australian Soap Neighbours Is Coming Back Thanks To Amazon
“Neigbours has captivated its audience for nearly 40 years, building a dedicated and loyal following for the lives and stories of the characters on Ramsay Street,” said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD original content and programming, Amazon Studios.
Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who starred as power couple Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell in the 80s, were previously announced as returning to the show. Joining them will be Peter O’Brien who appeared in the show’s first episode as Shane Ramsay, Ian Smith who played Harold Bishop, Mark Little as Joe Mangel and Paul Keane who played Des Clarke.
Smith said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be back. I’m the biggest sook under the sun. I’m going to be shocking on the last night that Neighbours airs. It really will be an end of an era and I am so proud to have been a part of it.”
Earlier this year, hannel 5 confirmed that the show will no longer air on the station “beyond this summer.” As many fans probably already know, Neighbours has launched the careers of stars including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie. A spokesperson for the channel said: “Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.
It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series. We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.”
The statement also said, “We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”
