Neighbours is signing off with a bang. In fact, even actor Stefan Dennis says he “surprised himself” by becoming incredibly emotional on the last day of filming the long-running Australian soap opera. Here’s what you need to know.
The actor, who played the villainous Paul Robinson, said it was “a melancholy day” as he recalled experiences from the past 37 years, including encounters with the British Royal Family. The show first aired in 1985 and follows the lives of those living and working in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough, with Dennis as one of the original cast members.
Neighbours Signs Off With An Emotional Bang
This past week marked the final day of filming on the globally-recognized soap. The Australian soap opera first aired in 1985 and follows the lives of those living and working in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough. The last episode of the soap will be “celebrating the most memorable characters from across many eras.”
Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who starred as power couple Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell in the 80s, were previously announced as returning to the show. Joining them will be Peter O’Brien who appeared in the show’s first episode as Shane Ramsay, Ian Smith who played Harold Bishop, Mark Little as Joe Mangel and Paul Keane who played Des Clarke. Smith said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be back. I’m the biggest sook under the sun. I’m going to be shocking on the last night that Neighbours airs. It really will be an end of an era and I am so proud to have been a part of it.”
Following speculation in The Sun over the weekend, Channel 5 confirmed that the show will no longer air on the station “beyond this summer.” As many fans probably already know, Neighbours has launched the careers of stars including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie. A spokesperson for the channel said: “Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer. It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series. We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.”
The statement also said, “We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”
