‘The Talk’ Renewed Despite Horrible Ratings and No Sharon Osbourne Replacement

It has been a season of controversy, extended hiatus and the exit of two of its star hosts, but The Talk has officially been renewed by CBS

The renewal news was made public in the form of a Tweet, and came as somewhat of a surprise to many.

The show, which will soon enter into its 12th season has seen viewership declining, even prior to the on-camera blow out between hosts Sheryl Underwood and Sharon Osbourne over Osbourne’s defense of Piers Morgan.

Between seasons 10 and 11 the ratings had dropped by 27 percent.  Thing only got worse from there. Though the spat between Osbourne and Underwood renewed interest in the show with The Talk reaching headlines like never before, it did not parlay into viewers.

From the season 11 premiere on Sept. 21, 2020 through March 14, 2021 The Talk was bringing in an average of 1.509 million daily viewers.

A month long hiatus to “evolve” followed the argument and the show returned in April, sans Osbourne. Since then, the show has averaged 1.305 million total viewers, a loss of 204,000 each day.

Osbourne is not the only cast member to leave the show this year. Carrie Ann Inaba, a former judge on Dancing With the Stars also took a leave of absence, citing the stress from the discord amongst her co-hosts as the reason behind flare ups of her autoimmune diseases.

The remaining hosts with Underwood, Amanda Kloots and Elaine Welteroth aren’t exactly household names. No one has been tapped to replace Osbourne and Inaba has not given the public a return date.

Further reason behind the surprise of the renewal was the act that this year, the Talk was only nominated for two daytime Emmys- both for the production team.

Sheryl Underwood has been tapped to host the Emmy show–this time solo as opposed to with her other co-hosts, as has been the case in the past two years.

Many consider this upcoming 12th season the final for The Talk, which first premiered in October 2010, calling it ‘filler’ until CBS can produce a suitable replacement that will draw in the audiences.

The Talk airs daily on CBS…for at least another year, apparently!
