An episode of ‘The Simpsons’ that mocks and makes fun of Chinese oppression has disappeared from Disney+ in Hong Kong, but there are some ideas out there as to what happened.

The episode in question is titled “Goo Goo Gai Pan” and aired in 2005, chronicling the Simpson’s trip to China so Marge’s sister, Selma, can adopt a baby, however, a Chinese official quickly takes the child from her arms. In another scene, the family visits Tiananmen Square, the legendary scene of protest where an unknown man stood in front of a tank in the street.

However, in the episode, the sign reads, “On this site, in 1989, nothing happened.” A dig at how China tried to clean up any news of what happened.

While there hasn’t been an announcement from Disney and the streaming service just debuted in Hong Kong, we can assume there’s been some sanitization by the Chinese Government. It’s not hard to see why they wouldn’t want that kind of stuff to be seen by their residents, but from the outside looking in, it’s just an example of the oppressive Chinese government.

As for subscribers outside of China, the episode seems to still be intact, so if you want to head over and watch it right now you can. It is a pretty hilarious episode. It’s episode 12 of season 16 and can be found on Disney+ still.

What do you think? Did you think they would really block the episode and what did you think of the original? Was it funny or did it hit you the wrong way? Let us know in the comments below.
