For John Cleese, this is nothing but one huge joke. The actor mocked Hank Azaria for apologizing about voicing Apu on the Simpsons. The Hollywood actor said this week that he feels as though he should apologize for being the voice of Apu on the long-running series.

Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, a Indian American character with a thick accent, operates the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in the fictional town of Springfield.

The Simpsons actor also recalled chatting to some of his son’s Indian classmates several years ago, including a 17-year-old who had “never even seen ‘The Simpsons’ but knows what Apu means.”

“It’s practically a slur at this point,” he said. “All he knows is that is how his people are thought of and represented to many people in this country.”

Yet, John Cleese doesn’t get why his fellow comedians should apologize for the work that they do. On Tuesday, he took to Twitter to take a lighthearted jab at Hank Azaria for feeling like he should apologize.

“Not wishing to be left behind by Hank Azaria, I would like to apologise on behalf of Monty Python for all the many sketches we did making fun of white English people,” John Cleese wrote. “We’re sorry for any distress we may have caused.”

Of course, it didn’t take long at all for both fans and critics to respond to John on Twitter for his comments. Many of them said, “Thank you John, as one of those affected white people who loved Monty python I take the humour in the spirit with which the writers meant for it to be told. And not to be beholden to the PC brigade that is killing creativity and freedom of speech, expression etc,” along with, “Monty Python would not have been able to exist nowadays with all the fragile folk! Thank God we have your sketches to remind us we need to laugh! We are not fragile and not having a sense of humor makes us brittle.”

Another fan wrote, “No need to apologise John. English people have the rare, wonderful gift of being able to laugh at ourselves and don’t feel we are being victimised when people take the piss a bit, at least not the elder generation. It’s part of who we are.”
