Steven Patrick Morrissey Slams The Simpsons For ‘Harshly Hateful’ Episode

Maybe he just can’t take a joke? Singer and songwriter Morrissey has issued a strongly worded statement which claims he was portrayed as an overweight racist on the latest episode of The Simpsons.

The character was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch and a series of 80s-inspired songs were written by Flight Of The Conchords’ Bret McKenzie for the episode. But Morrissey says there was nothing funny about the way he was supposedly portrayed on the show. Here’s what he has to say.

During the episode, titled Panic On The Streets of Springfield, Lisa Simpson becomes obsessed with the militantly vegan singer of a 1980s indie band.

But her dreams are shattered when it transpires her idol, Quilloughby. He’s the front man of “The Snuffs,” an imaginary friend of Lisa Simpson’s with a quiff, a strict vegan diet, and is anti-immigration.

In the episode, Lisa’s attends a concert for the band featuring an older version of the Quilloughby character who said he now ate meat because veganism “was invented by foreigners, of whom there are far too many on this planet.”

Morrissey lashed out at the series on his website with a statement that said: “The hatred shown towards me from the creators of the Simpsons is obviously a taunting lawsuit, but one that requires more funding than I could possibly muster in order to make a challenge.”

He continues: “You are especially despised if your music affects people in a strong and beautiful way, since music is no longer required to. In fact, the worst thing you can do in 2021 is to lend a bit of strength to the lives of others. There is no place in modern music for anyone with strong emotions … In a world obsessed with Hate Laws, there are none that protect me.”

Morrisey then said that he’s been getting this kind of treatment from the media for some time now.

He added, “I’ve had enough horror thrown at me that would kill off a herd of bison. Accusations usually come from someone with a crazed desire for importance; they don’t operate at a very high level. Writing for the Simpsons, for example, evidently requires only complete ignorance. But all of these things are too easy for me to say. In a world obsessed with Hate Laws, there are none that protect me … free speech no longer exists.”

Morrissey has consistently denied being racist in the past, but has been condemned on many occasions in the past for his comments on race.

So far a rep for The Simpsons has not made any comments about Morrissey’s criticism.
