Serena Williams has announced she will retire from tennis after the U.S. Open. Serena Williams has dominated the sport for decades. The 40-year-old broke the news in an essay for Vogue on Tuesday, saying it was time to move on and concentrate on more difficult tasks like raising a family and off-court business endeavors.

    Williams said,

“I’m terrible at goodbyes, the world’s worst. But please know that I am more grateful for you than I can ever express in words. You have carried me to so many wins and so many trophies. I’m going to miss that version of me, that girl who played tennis. And I’m going to miss you.”

Currently, Serena has won 14 doubles Grand Slams with her sister Venus in addition to her 23 individual Grand Slams. While two months pregnant in 2017, she won her most recent singles championship. Since making her tennis debut in 1995, Serena has changed the game forever and is unquestionably one of the best to have ever done it.

She is actually the highest-paid female athlete of all time and earned $45.3 million in 2022, placing her at number 31 on Forbes’ list of the top salaries for professionals. Serena and Venus became the first black women to hold any ownership of an NFL team in 2009, making them the team’s minority owners and demonstrating the success of her off-court endeavors.

Serena also owns a stake in the soccer team Angel City FC, and earlier this year she pledged millions in an effort to support a large investor’s purchase of Chelsea FC in London. She continued to comment on her retirement while also taking a shot at Tom Brady,

“Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity.”
