It was the year 2007, and Late Night TV had declared open season on a lot of young female celebrities at the time, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and of course the on we all remember, Paris Hilton. Hilton had been in a DUI and got sentenced to 45 days in jail.

Before that, she had always been on the right side of the law and was gearing up to start her at the time new fragrance launch, but no one really focused on that. No one focused on the good things that Paris was doing, instead we spent a lot of the early 00’s shaming Paris Hilton for troubles that a lot of young people get into.

    And we relished it.

Now, on her own podcast Paris goes into detail about one interview in particular from 2007 on the David Letterman show. Letterman’s team had been after her for months to appear on his talk show, and finally, after numerous attempts, Hilton finally said yes. However, she said she would only appear on one condition and that was if her stint in jail was not talked about.

The team agreed, however once Paris got in the chair, all bets were off, and you can guess where Letterman went next. He spent 6 of the 8 minute long interview badgering her about her sleeping arrangements in jail, and what kind of food she ate.

During the commercial breaks she would beg him to stop talking about it and he wouldn’t. Finally, after the interview was over she looked him straight in the eye and said, “I’m never coming on the show again, you’ve crossed a line.”

That’s when it was clear to Letterman that he had overstepped his boundaries. Afterward she recieved some expensive wine from him as a gift, but too little, too late, the damage was done. Previously, Hilton had had a positive experience with Letterman’s show and had been on the show several times before, but this was too much.

That wasn’t the only time a comedian went after Hilton in 2007 though, Sarah Silverman said at the MTV VMA Awards the day before Paris was set to begin her jail stint that the guards were busy painting the bars to resemble male genitalia so that Paris would feel more ‘at home’ and even commented that she hoped she wouldn’t break her teeth on those things.

    What in the slut shaming…?

Silverman has yet to apologize to Hilton, even after all these years. The thing is, yes they’re just words but things like that are damaging to say to people. The effects just don’t go away, while money and privelege might make things better, it doesn’t do one thing to heal mental scarring. That’s a sad fact. Stay tuned!!!
