A regulatory body in New Zealand has sanctioned fresh rules for participation in community sports that requires transgender athletes to simply declare which gender they intend to compete as.
Outrage After New Zealand Passes Law Allowing Transgender Athletes To Compete In Whatever Gender They Choose-‘Ridiculous, A Farce’
Sport New Zealand declared on Tuesday, 6th December 2022, that athletes will not be required to demonstrate or validate their gender, however, the regulations will not hold for elite sports.Â
It will be up to each sport to decide how transgender people can be involved in top-level sports. Politician Katherine Deves has bashed the decision, and made it clear in absolutely no uncertain terms that she was not on board with it.
In her comments, she said: “Sport New Zealand is just completely betraying women and girls, parents and daughters, supporters of women, they have just opened up the women’s category as a complete free-for-all.”
In the wake of Laurel Hubbard, the first transgender athlete to join the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020, Sport New Zealand had taken a stand to make a decision.
Not only that, but Sports New Zealand has called on sports associations to make a pledge to include transgender athletes by using their preferred pronouns and appointing someone to oversee inclusivity.Â
Additionally, it’s suggested that organisations consider taking out urinals in order to make bathrooms gender neutral. And yet, Katherine doubled down on her beliefs. Her following comments confirmed as much: “The category of a male is faster, bigger, stronger than the category of female.
“It’s why we have divisions in sports, we have it for age, disability and ability.” The response on social media was equally condemnatory. A significant proportion of people were of the view that this would now make it impossible to have a level playing field when it came to sports.
And as a result, many aspiring athletes would suffer great disadvantages. One person wrote: “Ridiculous! There will be no real female winners then. This makes sport a farce.”
