11,000 racers were reportedly disqualified by the Mexico Marathon’s organizers after electronic monitors showed they had not raced the entire distance. The race’s 40th anniversary edition, which took place on August 27 in Mexico City, drew more than 30,000 runners.

After the event, anonymous participant complaints compelled the organizers of the Mexico Marathon to look into them. According to complaints, thousands of runners did not cover the entire distance.

During the marathon, runners were allegedly caught utilizing cars and other forms of public transportation to cut the 26.22-mile course short. According to reports, hundreds of runners failed to pass through checkpoints around the route when an examination was conducted using data from their electronic trackers.

The Mexico City Sports Institute released a statement saying that they would look into the situation, “The Mexico City Sports Institute informs that it will proceed to identify those cases in which participants of the XL Mexico City Marathon Telcel 2023 have demonstrated an unsportsmanlike attitude during the event and will invalidate their registration times.”

According to reports, a number of runners complained that their electronic tracker had malfunctioned, which had prevented their times from being accurately recorded as they passed through checkpoints. Running athletes have previously been disqualified from the Mexico Marathon due to cheating.

20 percent of the competitors failed to finish the entire route in the 2017 event, resulting in over 6,000 runners being disqualified. Following the 2018 event, the organizers threw out the results of an additional 3,090 competitors.

The second-highest designation given to road running events by the governing organization, World Athletics Gold Label designation, is held by the Mexico Marathon. The status, according to the event’s organizers, emphasizes its “quality and professionalism” throughout Latin America.
