The National Football League‘s Washington franchise has a name! It was revealed today and it’s gotten mixed reviews thus far. Washington will here on be known as… The Washington Commanders. This comes a full 18 months after the team got rid of the name Redskins.
The team has competed as the Washington Football Team for two seasons, and finally, will march onto the field next season with a name for the fans to cheer for. Whether or not it feels like a CFL team, it’s what they’re going with!
One legacy. One unified future.

NFL’s Washington Franchise Finally Has A Name And It’s Kind Of Terrible
Former Washington legendary quarterback Joe Theismann may have accidentally leaked the new name on Monday after calling the team ‘the Commanders’ on CBS Sports Radio’s ‘The D.A. Show’. This was seemingly confirmed Tuesday after helicopter footage above Washington’s FedEx Stadium appeared to show the new name on a sign inside the team store.
Last month, team president Jason Wright had ruled out the new name changing to “Wolves” or “RedWolves” due to trademark issues. “We are very excited about our final selection, which aligns with our values, carries forth our rich history, represents the region and, most importantly, is inspired and informed by you, our fans,” Wright said.
Coach Ron Rivera spoke to the media live and answered some questions about the name. As for the overall reaction to the change, it’s not positive, and in fact, most people are upset with the name and the dumb comparisons to the President’s dog. Rivera and the Washington Commanders even retweeted and wrote back to the President about having “enough room for two Commanders in this town.”

This looks like the Washington franchise has taken a loss before the season even begins. I’m sure there will still be lifelong fans in the stands because they love football, but expect to see many old Redskins jerseys.
