The podcast, hosted by Jamie Otis and Doug Hehner of MAFS Season 1, detailed Derek’s change-of-heart and why he ended up airing Katie’s dirty laundry on the Season 10 reunion special.

Derek discovered Katie’s affair a month or so prior to filming the reunion special. “We talked about it, and I was a little shook that whole day,” Derek said. “We were in Nashville, and I had to fly back to Virginia for my grandfather’s funeral… [Katie] stayed, so I had a lot going through my head and I had a lot of time to think about things.”
The next day, Derek and Katie had a long discussion. This was the moment they decided to “just try to be friends.” The pair also agreed that Derek wouldn’t talk about the affair during the reunion, because Katie “already felt like everyone more or less hated her enough from everything.”

Just before filming the reunion, Derek said he and Katie met to discuss which topics to talk about on-camera. “We were catching up… because we weren’t living together at this point in time,” said Derek. “Going into the reunion, we wanted to make sure we were on the same page with things and make sure we don’t bury anyone, I suppose.” Derek then confessed, “I always kind of had this [affair] in the back of my pocket. I was like, ‘If you end up being a real twat, or whatever you want to call it, then I have no qualms about calling this out.’”

Though the two initially had an amicable agreement, Derek later discovered shocking news from fellow Season 10 castmates. He explained: “Just a couple of days before the reunion filmed, after the dinner [with Katie], I get this information from three different cast members, and I verified it… that not only did she have an affair just two weeks after we moved in with each other, but she [also slept with her ex-boyfriend]… like the day after our honeymoon.”
Derek had given Katie the utmost patience during their relationship, but he could not let this revelation slide. Derek confessed, “So at this point in time, I am like… ‘I just have no sympathy now…’ I was fed up with it! I only have so much patience.” Since Derek outed Katie during the reunion special, she has received a mass amount of hate messages from MAFS viewers. Derek has since asked fans to ease up on her.
