Shane Dawson is no stranger to controversy, in fact he just recently started making content again after his cancellation in 2020. Now, not only is he aligning himself with Jeffree Star (another fellow, cancelled youtuber – however Jeffree is the type that just doesn’t seem to care) and making a documentary, but he’s also decided to include youtuber Destry Smith (simply known as Destry, by most) in his podcast as his new editor when his podcast goes weekly next year in 2023.
Destry Smith used to be a regular on Shane Dawson’s youtube channel back in the day, but as of late a lot of people on social media have come forward and made pedophillic allegations against him, saying that he sent inappropriate messages to minors on social media.
Is Shane Dawson going to get himself cancelled again?
Destry made an apology video but most people said that it wasn’t really that much of an apology video at all and they really aren’t buying it. So that begs the question, is Shane Dawson really willing to risk possibly getting cancelled again over whom he’s aligned himself with?
One thing we have to remember is that Destry won’t be on-camera or even actually on the podcast at all, he’s simply been hired on as the editor. Editors don’t really get any airtime, so unless Shane wants to dedicate an entire podcast to “Cancelled Youtubers and the People Who Love Them” like a 90’s TV talk show, we probably won’t ever see Destry actually on-screen. In a way, you could say that he’s not actually giving Destry a platform because Destry wasn’t hired on as a guest host, but as an editor.
That being said, Destry is the one in the control room, editing the podcast, so unless Shane has a contract that says he gets final cut then Destry is in a real position to make or break Shane with the control he’s been given – if he’s been given any real control at all and Shane isn’t behind him pulling the strings, though, with as badly as he’s been cancelled in the past it’s hard to believe Shane would demand anything less than final cut of podcast episodes.
Is it a good idea? That remains to be seen, because as far as we know Destry hasn’t started the job yet. Some of the fans are literally on social media begging Shane not to align himself with Destry though, saying that for someone who says he doesn’t want to “harm children” that he sure does hang around with people who do. Yike! Will this be another cancellable offense on Shane’s part? Stay tuned!!!
