HBO’s ‘Fake Famous’ is a social experiment that will take random people and try to make them famous online by buying followers, getting sponsorships, and getting their faces out there. However, is being “famous” everything it’s chopped up to be or will there be consequences that they didn’t realize?

In the trailer, we see some of the test subjects who want to become famous and what they have to do to put out the image that they are. Take a look at the trailer below that was uploaded with the following description,

“An unreal social experiment. Fake Famous, the true story of a social experiment that reveals what’s really happening behind-the-scenes of influencer fame, premieres February 2 at 9PM on HBO Max. #HBO #HBODocs #FakeFamous”

Viewers commented on the trailer, “Out of Touch with reality. A lot of these Wannabes can’t even change a Flat tire”, “Everyone is famous now, and if everyone is famous, no one is.”, “wow this looks depressing thanks hbo….”, “First world problems”, and “Really disappointed in this content that could be on any channel. Tired of reality TV.”.

It’s interesting to see the mixed responses on the trailer. Is this really what people want to see? It seems like a lot of viewers are tired of seeing these “influencers” and would rather see some new original content. However, this social experiment may catch the eyes of a lot of people who think they want to be “famous”. After they realize what it’s like behind the scenes, it may dissuade a lot of people from “influencer marketing”.
