‘General Hospital’ spoilers pose the question, which one of Nina Reeves’s (Cynthia Watros) daughters is crazier: Willow Cain (Katelyn MacMullen) or Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier).
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Nelle Was Openly Sinister
It’s been a heated debate among many GH fans, and everyone has their own opinion, of course. We think that while Nelle is more open about her sinister side, Willow is more like a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.”
In some ways, it’s more disturbing that Willow portrays herself as a doe-eyed, innocent compared to her sister, Nelle, who is a clear-cut villain.
Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) once told Willow that with Nelle, she knew exactly what she was getting. However, with Willow, her wicked actions were a total shock.
Carly has a point. Willow started out on the soap as a sweet school- teacher who was trustworthy and kind. Nelle was always psychotic.
It was very vindictive of Nelle to gaslight Carly and make her think that her dead son, Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig), was alive. In fact, it was downright cruel and vicious.
Nelle also pulled off a downright sinister baby switch involving Nelle’s healthy newborn baby and a deceased baby, who happened to belong to Willow.
The baby who was alive belonged to Michael Corinthos‘ (Rory Gibson). The irony isn’t lost on us, either. We had Nelle’s number from day one.
However, the undoing of goody-two-shoes Willow was gradual and didn’t happen overnight. It was definitely storyline dictated.
We started to see cracks in Willow’s sweet, innocent façade when she began an emotional affair with her husband, Michael’s uncle, Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison).
It was subtle at first, but once Willow and Drew had sex on the floor of his daughter’s playroom the night her mother had died, she completely lost all rooting value.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Fans Turned on Willow Quickly
Fans had already started to turn on her after that first kiss on the Fourth of July, but some were convinced Drew was taking advantage of his nephew’s wife.
For whatever reason, Willow had a hero-complex when it came to Drew, convinced that he had “saved her life” when the real hero was Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati).
When Willow moved her and her children in with Drew while Michael was recovering in a burn unit, it was game on for Weeping Willow.
For a while, Willow was Drew’s puppet. She jumped when he asked how high, and the sun set and the moon rose because of him. We were watching someone in a one-woman-cult called Dawn of Drew.
It wasn’t entertaing watching someone who had completely lost all sense of autonomy. She lost herself in Drew and would have literally done whatever he told her to do.
At least Nelle was overtly evil. She wore her villainess status with pride and was quick to give the middle finger to anyone who dared cross her.
The “Nelle” in Willow didn’t really come out until after she had a mental breakdown when Michael was given custody of the kids. It was as if something in her had snapped.
We saw a brief glimpse of the old Willow when she was in the hospital after she helped Sasha Corbin (Sofia Mattsson) deliver her baby in court.
A trained nurse, Willow, had experience and stepped up. Not to mention, the baby belonged to Michael.
Willow was at the hospital with Michael and the kids, visiting the new baby, and they all seemed happy. Some fans hoped the old Willow might be in there somewhere.
General Hospital Spoilers: Willow Chose Drew Over Her Kids In Every Instance
Nope. When Drew abused a child, Willow’s adopted son, to get his way, Wiley Corinthos (Viron Weaver) asked Michael if he still wanted him and Amelia Corinthos (Sequoia and Serenity Mork Macko).
Drew had made sure he was within earshot so that Wiley would hear him say that Michael no longer wanted him.
When Michael reiterated the disgusting comment to Willow and told her what Drew had done, she chose to believe Drew over her own son.
Willow was unraveling right before our very eyes. When she lost custody of her kids, she broke down in the courtroom, begging Michael to let her see her children.
It was somehow both pitiful and heartbreaking all at once. Katelyn MacMullen has managed to knock that scene out of the park.
Then, there was the incident with Sasha’s baby, Daisy. She stalked Daisy and gaslighted Sasha, which is basically “the hand that rocks the cradle” 101.
What she did to Sasha was as cruel as what Nelle did to Carly back in the day, and we all wanted her to go down for it.
The young woman who selflessly refused cancer treatment to protect her unborn baby had been replaced by someone we barely recognized.
So, it came as no surprise to GH viewers when the show revealed last week that Willow was the one who shot Drew.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Willow Is More Fun Now that She Despises Drew
Now, Willow is almost fun to watch. She’s finally embraced her inner Nelle, which makes her a much more compelling character.
Fans love to hate Willow, and when Carly threw her drink at Drew at the restaurant, Willow let out a little giggle. It was dark and twisted, but since we all despise Drew, it was almost endearing.
We can even understand why Willow wanted to shoot him. We think if Nelle were alive (which she still might be), Willow and Nelle might actually be able to team up now.
They have basically become the same kind of character. Soaps need characters like Willow and Nelle to balance the rest of the canvas and create the perfect synergy.
So, to answer the question of who is the bigger villain, we think these days, Willow might give Nelle a run for her money. No offense, but before Willow’s transformation, she was kind of boring.
Katelyn MacMullen is a masterclass in playing the complex, emotionally unstable, villionous Willow. MacMullen has proven herself as a gifted actress.
Willow has finally come into her own, and it’s almost impossible not to root for her to take down sleazy, insipid Drew.
