‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers commemorate Finola Hughes’ huge milestone as she celebrates 40 years of playing Anna Devane on the soap.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Anna Devane Arrived In Port Charles In April 1985 As A Jewel Thief
Hughes joined the show when she was 25 years old, but that was after she danced with John Travolta in the 1983 film Staying Alive and created the role of Victoria the White Feline in the London production of Andrew Llyod Webber’s musical Cats.
Hughes was shocked when she won the pivotal role of Anna since the part had initially been created for an American actress.
On April 10, 1985, GH introduced the iconic character Anna Devane. The evolution of Anna from bad** super spy to police commissioner has been exhilarating to watch. In an era of tremendously talented breakout stars on the soap, Anna quickly became a fan favorite.
Anna arrived in Port Charles as a jewel thief. She befriended Holly Sutton (Emma Samms), but what Holly didn’t know was that Anna had once been married to her husband, Robert Scorpio (Tristian Rogers).
Robert and Anna worked together at the WSB. They had a young daughter, Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough). Robert had apparently divorced Anna because she had been working as a double agent with the DVX.
The love story that really had fans swooning was Anna and Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan). Anna fell in love with Duke in spite of herself, as he was in deep with the mob.
Unfortunately, Duke was killed by Carlos Rivera (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) under the orders of Julian Jerome (William DeVry) in May 2015.
When talking about the stereotypical soap trope, evil twins come to mind. Hughes has some experience with this, as she played Anna’s twin sister, Alex Devane.
‘’General Hospital’ Spoilers: Hughes Is Thrilled Over The New Generation Of The WSB
Hughes was recently interviewed by Woman’s World and said the 1995 storyline of Robin losing her boyfriend, Stone Cates (Michael Sutton), to AIDS and being diagnosed with HIV itself was groundbreaking.
She cited this unforgettable arc as an example of GH’s masterclass in storytelling, which is why the soap has been around for 62 years.
Hughes also discussed the new generation of the WSB. The actress is thrilled the writers are crafting fresh tales involving Anna’s former organization, the WSB.
“In our day, we just had this secret room which had this monstrous sort of computer, and we would go in there and do whatever skullduggery we were up to,”
Hughes recalled.
“But now we have Brennan commanding drones from his desk,”
She continued.
“The WSB is shiner and more specific.”
“And I love the training of the new generation,” she added. “I wish Anna could get involved because she was probably Josslyn’s age when she was training to become WSB,”
She said.
General Hospital Spoilers: Hughes Loves Playing A “Bada**”
Soap Opera Digest also interviewed Hughes about her 40th anniversary on GH. After all these years, she is still a fan favorite.
When asked about the best part of playing Anna,
She responded,
“It’s really gratifying to be able to do this work and still have people appreciate it,”
She said.
She’s not comfortable taking all the credit for creating one of the most legendary GH characters, but she admitted,
“Let’s say I slipped into her skin. It was there. They drew the outline, and it was a perfect fit. I think. I feel like I steward Anna in a way.”
Hughes also happens to be one of Anna’s greatest fans. “I love playing a bada**.,” she gushed. “A bada** whose heart, hopefully, is in the right place.”
