Workplace abuse allegations have hit Kevin Clash, the man that was behind the Elmo puppet. A puppet wrangler who worked on the set of the Disney PLus series “Earth to Ned” has said that on his first day in 2019 he was advised to avoid Clash because his behavior was rather unpleasant.
The co-worker allegedly warned the new worker to never address Clash directly. The wrangler spoke out to The Hollywood Reporter saying,
“Amongst other puppeteers, he’s known to be very bubbly and kin. But when it came to wranglers, I was told he tends to be condescending and nasty.”
Ex-Elmo Puppeteer Kevin Clash Accused Of Workplace Abuse
Apparently, the wrangler had encountered Clash’s anger before, saying he shouted at him on set for allegedly standing too close to him. “He yelled at me because he was leaving a voicemail as Elmo for someone’s kid. I think I was standing too close to him. He told me to ‘shut the f–k up.‘”
As of now, Clash and the Jim Henson Company have not responded to the accusations. This follows several other sexual abuse claims that made Clash depart from the show in 2012, after working as Elmo since 1984. He has denied the sexual abuse claims, and the cases were eventually dropped due to the statute of limitations.
He has continued to work as a puppeteer for the Jim Henson Company on multiple projects, however, including ‘The Happytime Murders’ and the Netflix series ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’.
Whether or not those allegations will come to light and be true is unknown, but it certainly doesn’t seem good for the veteran puppeteer. It’s unfortunate when the innocence of these childhood icons are taken, and none may be bigger than Elmo himself.
