Brian Flores has sued the NFL and three teams, the Dolphins, the Broncos, and the Giants – alleging discrimination in the interview process with Denver and New York and his firing from Miami. The 58-page lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court Tuesday and seeks class-action status.
Flores alleges the Dolphins owner Stephen Ross attempted to incentivize him to lose on purpose shortly after he was hired in 2019. Allegedly Ross offered Flores $100,000 for every loss that season. However, once they won some games late in the season, Ross was angry because he was compromising the draft position.

Flores has also alleged that the Giants interviewed him for one reason and one reason only, to comply with the Rooney Rule. The Rooney Rule requires teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for a head coaching job and at least one external minority candidate for a coordinator job, which, in of itself, is a racist rule. It was made as a reaction in 2002 to the firing of Tony Dungy and while it does allow minorities to be considered for jobs, it does so solely based on their race. This is what has Flores so upset. While the rule is there so he may be interviewed, the Giants are forced to comply even if they already have their head coach in mind.
Meanwhile, he’s also alleged that for his interview in Denver, John Elway showed up an hour late and hungover from the night before. However, the Broncos have come out to defend themselves, saying the interview started promptly and lasted three and a half hours.
Douglas Wigdor, a lawyer for Flores, told The New York Times that Wigdor Law LLP is looking into allegations from other coaches who could be part of the class-action suit.
