King Charles III has put his family drama on the back burner today for his state visit in Italy. Queen Camilla accompanied the monarch to Vatican City in Rome.
The King Joined Pope Leo XIV For Prayers At the Sistine Chapel
Charles joined Pope Leo XIV for prayers at the Sistine Chapel. The King made history as the first British sovereign to participate in a Catholic Church service since the sixteenth century.
Today also marks Charles and Camilla’s first meeting with the new Pope since his election in May upon Pope Francis’s passing.
The Vatican explained that since the King was also the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, he wanted to have a
“spiritual dimension to his trip.”
The royal couple was introduced to Pope Leo in the Apostolic Palace library, a venue for religious meetings.
After the formal introductions, there was an exchange of gifts. His Majesty presented Pope Leo with a large silver photo and the icon of St. Edward the Confessor.
The Pope presented the King with a miniature mosaic of Jesus Christ. During the historic meeting, Pope Leo also bestowed on the King the high honor of Knight Grand Cross.
King Charles’s visit comes 40 years after Queen Elizabeth II prevented him from taking part in a papal mass during his visit to Vatican City with his then-wife, Princess Diana.
The Pope and the King coming together sends an important message of religious tolerance and Charles’s efforts to unite people across religions and foster interfaith harmony.
According to the Daily Mail, Buckingham Palace said,
“It’s the first time since Henry VIII’s Reformation of the 1530s that a sovereign and Head of the Church of England has taken part in a public act of worship with the leader of the Catholic Church.”
Pope Leo Gave Charles A Rare Gift Of Spiritual Fellowship
Pope Leo also recognizes Charles’s efforts to champion interfaith harmony. The leader of the Catholic Church made the King a “Royal Confrater” of the Papal Basilica and Abbey of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls.
It is a rare gift of spiritual fellowship, as “frater” means “brother” in Latin. The Pope and the King came together to celebrate their new bond.
A special seat has been created for Charles to demonstrate the mutual respect between the monarch and the Pope.
The seat is decorated with the King’s coat of arms and will be used by His Majesty during the service. The special chair was designed specifically for the occasion.
Pope Leo also held a service in the Sistine Chapel, focused on the King’s unwavering commitment to the environment.
The King’s visit to Rome is intended to strengthen relations between the UK and the Catholic Church. Together, they will work to restore peace worldwide and tackle climate change.
The historic visit comes hot on the heels of Prince Andrew’s relinquishing his title, the Duke of York, which was also a landmark.
Today, it was announced that Andrew will be expected to present evidence of his association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in front of a US committee.
Prince Andrew’s connection to Epstein has dominated the news for several days now. Primarily, since his sex abuse victim, Virginia Giuffre’s, groundbreaking memoir has been published.
