Prince Andrew has finally agreed to give up his royal titles after pressure from King Charles. As of today, he will no longer be known as the Duke of York.
The King Is Fed Up With Andrew Causing Embarrassment To The Royal Family
The development followed a sequence of various scandals after Andrew had been closely linked with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his relationship with a Chinese spy.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, Andrew said,
“In discussion with the King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the royal family.”
He continued,
“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.”
He added,
“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honors which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
The King is officially fed up with the negative attention that Andrew draws toward the monarchy. Additionally, Andrew will also give up his membership of the Order of the Garter.
Andrew will also relinquish his position as Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victoria Order. However, since he is the son of Queen Elizabeth II, he will still be known as “Prince Andrew.”
His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who is also causing headaches, is giving up her royal titles. She will no longer be known as the Duchess of York.
However, the titles of their two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will remain unaffected by the change.
Prince William Has Been Very Vocal About Wanting To Strip Andrew’s Royal Titles
The King has been rallying with his son, Prince William, heir to the throne, his sister, Princess Anne, and his brother, Prince Edward, so they could convince Andrew to give up his titles. Prince William, in particular, has long pushed for Andrew to be banished from royal life.
There was a sense of relief at the Palace after this development occurred. The King strongly felt that something had to be done and was satisfied with the outcome.
Andrew’s role as Counsellor of the State is also inactive since he’s no longer a working member of the royal family.
Back when the Queen was still alive, Andrew received her love and quiet support. However, after too many scandals to count and Andrew being publicly ostracized, the royal family decided it was time to take action.
Andrew is also banned from taking part in Christmas at Sandringham. However, the King admitted that while he can’t legally remove Andrew from his cushy home at Royal Lodge, where he currently lives with his ex-wife, Charles would be happy to see him vacate.
His brother will stay at Royal Lodge as long as he keeps up with the agreed-upon repairs and pays the rent. That said, Charles was keen to protect his daughters from having their royal lives ruined due to his father’s actions.
Virginia Giuffre’s Family Said This Is “A Victory For Virginia” And Other Survivors Of Sexual Abuse
Virginia Giuffre, the late victim of Jeffrey Epstein, was infamously pictured with Prince Andrew in February 2011, which confirmed the rumors that he and the sex offender were close and engaged in illegal activity together.
Giuffre’s family has described the stripping of Andrew’s titles as
“vindication for survivors everywhere.”
They also said that the King finally taking action to remove Andrew’s titles was a
“powerful step forward in our fight to bring Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking network to justice.”
They continued,
“This moment serves as a victory for Virginia, who consistently maintained, ‘He knows what happened, I know what happened, and there’s only one of us telling the truth, and I know that’s me.”
Sadly, Virginia Giuffre took her own life in April 2025.
