Meghan Markle committed the “ultimate royal faux pas” during her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018. The royals have a set of rules they follow, and it’s rooted in tradition.
Meghan Markle Was Given Etiquette Lessons Before The Wedding
The bride had already ruffled the Queen’s feathers. She wore a wedding gown deemed “too white” since Meghan was a divorcee. Her decision to wear a veil also violated that rule.
It looked like Meghan Markle neglected to curtsy to the Queen when she walked down the aisle, and people took notice.
Social media blew up, and some people suggested that Meghan was so nervous and distracted by the ceremony that she didn’t remember it.
Others wondered if they somehow missed Meghan’s curtsy. Perhaps they looked away for a second, and that’s when it occurred.
Some claimed the camera’s angle changed to capture a shot inside the church. Viewers could see the couple barely perform a respectful bow.
In the months before her wedding day, the royal household and diplomatic staff taught Meghan proper etiquette and tradition.
Meghan learned to give a proper royal handshake, stand up when the Queen does, not engage in PDA, and avoid signing autographs.
She was schooled in every area concerning how to conduct herself during engagements and other royal events and carry herself as an official member of the royal family.
Historically, women who marry into the royal family must curtsy to the Queen. According to the Order of Precedence, Meghan had to curtsy. She would curtsy to those who belonged to a higher station than her, such as Kate Middleton.
The Order of Precedence determines royal protocol and adheres to the hierarchical structure of the institution. For example, Prince Phillip would always have to walk at least a few steps behind the Queen.
Meghan Mocked Curtsying To The Queen On The Sussexes Netflix Docuseries
Another incident occurred when Meghan’s heel became caught in her veil, and as she was making her way out of the car to go into the church, she was offered no help.
Royal author Tom Bower was told by a royal officer that Meghan’s negative behavior toward others during the wedding rehearsal was that “no one had any feeling of goodwill toward the bride.”
Meghan caused an international stir. The Duchess mocked the Queen with a fake, exaggerated curtsy. This was during Harry and Meghan’s Netflix docuseries.
Meghan first met the Queen during a luncheon at the Royal Lodge in Windsor in 2016. She claimed the event felt like an antiquated meal at Medieval Times.
Prince Harry, who must have been hugely embarrassed, said that Meghan meeting the Queen was like a “shock to the system.”
Meghan recalled when Harry told her in the car that his grandmother was coming to lunch, and he asked her if she knew how to curtsy. “I thought it was a joke,” Meghan revealed.
Meghan claimed she hadn’t been aware of royal customs since she was American. Her disrespectful remarks were at the center of controversy with royal watchers.
She was given all the tools to succeed in the royal family, yet she squandered them. Meghan’s jokes about Britain’s long-standing traditions weren’t funny to royal watchers.
