Meghan Markle broke royal protocol from the start to the finish of her career. There were clues that Meghan would be a rule breaker on her wedding day when she wore a blatantly white dress for her walk down the aisle to marry Prince Harry.
The Queen Was Offended By Meghan’s “Too White” Wedding Dress
In the British royal family, it is frowned upon for a divorced bride to wear a “too white” dress on her wedding day, especially when the ceremony occurs in church.
She apparently also threw a fit over not being able to wear the tiara she wanted as Queen Elizabeth II told her to choose another, more appropriate tiara for the occasion.
The Queen also questioned Meghan’s decision to wear a veil, given that she was entering her second marriage.
Meghan Markle controversially and often broke royal protocol with her fashion choices. According to royal expert Myka Meier,
“The bottom line is that the outfit always has to fit the occasion.”
She explains,
“It has to be modest, elegant, and appropriate, and it should never distract from the role. In other words, royal family member’s clothes should never distract the public from what they are doing.”
One could argue that Princess Diana and Princess Kate have worn some outfits that bend the rules but never blatantly broke royal protocol.
Fashion etiquette expert Liz Wyse asserts this observation about royal fashion,
“Their clothes are never incongruous, and they always use their fashion choices to communicate their respect for their hosts and the general public.”
The Duchess Of Sussex Favored Neutral Colors As A Royal
When it comes to royal fashion, vibrant colors are a must to make sure they stand out in the crowd and convey approachability. Note that Queen Elizabeth always chose bold colors for these reasons.
In Harry and Meghan’s docuseries on Netflix, the Duchess of Sussex admitted that she wore neutral tones and colors during her time as a royal.
“Beige, camel, tan, etc,” she told the audience. She explained that her goal was to blend in. Meghan’s wrinkled clothes certainly didn’t help her.
When you’re a royal, the objective is to look your best. Meghan would often step out in ensembles that made her look like she had picked the clothes out of the hamper. She still appears to follow that practice today.
The royal family also maintains rules to be modest about baring themselves and the length of their garments. The appropriate length should be no more than three or four inches above the knee, and slits in dresses should not be too obvious.
Meghan’s short black dress, which she wore to the Hamilton gala performance, turned heads for the wrong reasons, as she neglected to wear tights to cover her bare legs. The late Queen preferred ladies to wear tights, especially for formal events.
Meghan Markle Should Have Followed Princess Kate As Her Fashion Example
Meghan also caused a monumental stir when she wore a sun dress with a thigh-high split down the side during a visit to Australia in 2018.
Royals only dress down for off-duty appearances, which is why Meghan’s choice to wear ripped denim jeans and an oversized shirt at the Invictus Games was critically panned.
The Princess of Wales wears denim jeans only when appropriate and would never wear jeans with large holes in the knee.
She also tends to favor dark denim, which makes her appear more polished and sophisticated, pairing it with a smart blazer to complete her look.
Another matter of interest is Meghan’s signature “messy bun,” which always looks haphazardly thrown together at the last minute.
Comparing her updo to the likes of Kate Middelton, the Princess never has loose pieces of hair falling over her face, which isn’t exactly a good look.
As a royal, Meghan Markle lacked taste and often wore ill-fitted, crumpled clothes. She also seems to believe wearing an expensive outfit will look classy but frequently looks frumpy and lackluster in pictures. If she had followed Princess Catherine as an example, she would have hardly ever missed the mark.
