King Charles is the current reigning monarch. Queen Elizabeth was the reigning monarch for over 70 years. Her Majesty wore the crown for longer than any other British ruler.

The Way The Order Of Succession Works

Some may be surprised at how the line of succession works. Succession drops to the firstborn child of the successor and their children. This “chain” is trailed by the next oldest sibling of the inheritor and their children.

This progression is why, for example, Prince William’s children are in the line of succession ahead of Prince Harry and why Harry’s children are ahead of Prince Andrew.

If William and Kate Middleton had another child, that girl or boy would bring Harry down further in the line of succession.

In the simplest terms possible, the line of succession is the order in which royal family members fall in line if the reigning King or Queen passed on.

Of course, Prince William is next in line to the British throne. Like Charles, William was born to be King. He’s the first son of Princess Diana and King Charles.

He was the first future King to be born in a hospital. William is also an experienced pilot. He functioned as a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force.

    Prince William’s Children Come Next

Next is William’s son, Prince George. He was born in July 2013 and is the oldest child of Prince William and Princess Kate. His birth marked the second time three generations in the line of succession have been alive simultaneously.

The only time this occurred in history was throughout Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901. Three of her uncles, George IV, Frederick Duke of York, and William VI, were in the line of succession ahead of her.

Prince William, Prince George And Princess Charlotte King Charles

Princess Charlotte is in line to become Queen after George. She is the first and youngest female in line for the throne.

Princess Charlotte takes the fourth spot in line over Louis. She was born in May 2015, and her middle name is a nod to the late Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana. Charlotte is also the feminine version of the name Charles.

Prince Louis is next in line. He is the youngest of William and Kate’s three children. He was born in April 2018. It is believed that Louis was named after Lord Louis Mountbatten, the great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

Prince Harry And His Children Are Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh, In Line

Prince Harry is the second after William and his children. Harry is known for his admirable work on the Invictus Games, a sports competition for disabled veterans.

He and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down from their royal duties in 2020 and moved to the US. He’s a controversial figure, and some have called for him to be stripped of his titles.

After the Duke of Sussex comes his two children. Archie is just above Lilibet. As of March 2023, Harry and Meghan’s children have been in the line of succession.

In Harry and Meghan’s March 2021 Oprah interview, Meghan alleged that the Palace was trying to change the rules so Archie wouldn’t become a prince. But that simply isn’t true.

In 1917, George V declared that the monarch’s great-grandchildren would no longer be princes or princesses, except for the oldest son of the oldest son of the Prince of Wales.

This is why Prince George was automatically a prince under Queen Elizabeth’s rule. However, Archie wasn’t a prince until the Queen passed and Charles became King.

Meghan had inferred that the royal family was trying to rob Archie of his titles because of his unknown gender and race. Many US people didn’t understand this wasn’t the case. Under King Charles’s rule, Prince Archie is sixth in line to the throne.

    Archie and Lilibet

Harry and Meghan’s daughter, Princess Lilibet, born in June 2021, is seventh in line to the throne.

She’s King Charles’s youngest grandchild. Her name is a nod to Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana. Lilibet was the late Queen’s childhood nickname.

Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice, And Her Daughter

Next is Prince Andrew, whose scandal over his association with known sex offender Jeffrey Epstein overshadows his royal titles. Andrew stepped down from his royal duties in 2019.

Princess Beatrice of York is ninth in line. Princess Beatrice and her sister Princess Eugenie are not official working royals. However, they are valued for their charity work.

Beatrice is an ambassador for Children in Crisis, which helps educate children who are facing poverty, and Springboard for Children, which provides literacy support to disadvantaged children.

Tenth in line is Beatrice’s daughter, whom she shares with her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Her name is Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi. Beatrice’s little girl was born in September 2021.
