Travis McMichael thought for certain that a federal judge would hear his case and set him up in a cushy federal prison cell after he admitted in open court that not only did he murder Ahmaud Arbery in cold blood, he chased him down with a gun simply because ‘he was a black man’.

We’re proud to say that this plea was rejected.

The deal would have let McMichael and his father, who were both found guilty of Arbery’s murder, go to federal prison instead of serving their life without parole sentence in state prison where they currently reside.

An impassioned plea from Arbery’s Mother, Wanda Cooper Jones was also heard by the federal judge saying, “The state of Georgia has already given these men what they deserve.” both Jones and Marcus Arbery, Ahmaud’s father, viewed this deal as an ‘unauthorized backroom deal’ and a betrayal of their trust.

Thankfully it would seem that a federal judge saw it that way too.

The deal would allow for McMichael and his Father to serve 30 years in a ‘preferred federal prison’ rather than the state pen. The man who filmed the murder, their neighbor, William ‘Roddie’ Bryan, is also serving life but will be eligible for parole in 15 years.

The judge was not hearing any of it though, and decided that these two should not get preferential treatment – because their victim surely didn’t. “I am not comfortable accepting the terms of this agreement.” That is the correct reaction, your honor.

One has to wonder about the audacity of these murderers, though. At the end of the day, these were fully capable adults who knew the law and knew that this man was just passing through the neighborhood, not hurting anyone.

Did they honestly think that they deserved less than what they got for showing no mercy to a completely innocent, unarmed man for the color of his skin? Did they really think they could outsmart the justice system when they basically admitted in open court that they committed a hate crime?

And did they really think that spending 30 years in a federal prison would sate the grief of a Mother who’s going to live a lifetime without her son? You wonder. Good call, Judge.
