Some things are best kept just behind closed palace doors, right? That seems to be the case for the British Royal Family as there’s a new report that says Prince Philip’s will is to remain private. Queen Elizabeth’s husband passed away back in April, and just one month shy of his 100th birthday. Here’s what you need to know.

While the British Royal Family is oftentimes very forthcoming about details such as their yearly spending budget, the High Court ruled that Prince Philip’s will is to be kept a secret to protect the Queen’s “dignity.”

Just this week it was ruled that Prince Philip‘s will is to be kept sealed for 90 years from the grant of probate – the formal process which confirms the authority of an executor to administer a deceased person’s estate. However, the standard convention following the death of a senior member of the Royal Family is for an application to be sent to the president of the family division of the High Court to seal their will.

Sir Andrew McFarlane, President of the Family Division, said that the constitutional position of the Sovereign meant ”it is appropriate to have a special practice in relation to Royal wills. There is a need to enhance the protection afforded to truly private aspects of the lives of this limited group of individuals in order to maintain the dignity of the Sovereign and close members of Her family.”

The ruling also states ”there is a public interest in protecting the private rights of the Sovereign and close members of the Royal Family. The content of a person’s will and the details of their estate are plainly entirely private matters. Whilst much of the life of a member of the Royal Family will be taken up with public activities, both they and the Sovereign Herself are also private individuals.”
