Dave Chappelle released a new Netflix special called “The Closer”, which addressed some pretty controversial topics, mostly, he wanted to address the rumors of transphobia that have been plaguing him for years and do it in a way that his audience could identify with.
So of course that means he’s going to do this in a humorous manner, the man’s a comedian! But that didn’t seem to be good enough for some ET hosts who were too busy clutching their proverbial pearls and saying that he shouldn’t have put his personal view out there on a Netflix special for everyone to see.
Chappelle, was being honest.
Let’s face it, no he doesn’t have the most ‘woke’ viewpoints in the world and isn’t the most sensitive when it comes to matters of gender identity, but this is Dave Chappelle, were we really expecting Santa Claus?
It’s comedy, that’s not to say we can’t get offended by comedy, we totally can, but the advent of free will means that we don’t really have to consume that which offends us either. Some people do a thing called ‘hate watching’ which is watching a show just to specifically hate on it and trash it with their friends, but as fun as that is, that’s still a choice.
For all the transphobic rumors that have swirled around about Chapelle over the years, he defends himself in the special by saying that in his earlier years, he was very uneducated as to what terms were proper to use when referring to transgender individuals, and he alluded to the fact that he is still learning.
He did come out in defense of JK Rowling’s stance on gender, which is going to definitely offend some fans, but the fact of the matter about his whole comedy special is that he was honest… and he said that he wasn’t going to make any more jokes about the LGBT community until he was sure that everyone was laughing together.
That seems to be an appropriate compromise. Sadly, he said that this is the last Netflix special he’ll be doing for awhile… so we don’t know when we’ll have another one. Guess the media will have to find someone new to clutch their pearls over. Stay tuned!!!
